Where are the best fried chicken shops in the US? National ranking says two are in KC
Two of the best fried chicken restaurants in the United States sit right across the border from each other, according to a new national ranking.
Based in the United Kingdom, food blog Lovefood.com’s writing staff travels worldwide to try meals from restaurants of all kinds. In their most recent ranking of each state’s “best fried chicken joint,” they landed on two Kansas City area restaurants to represent Kansas and Missouri.
In Missouri, Kansas City-based Lula Southern Cookhouse, 1617 Main St., was named the best in the state. In their review of Lula, Lovefood.com said the restaurant’s focus is Southern cooking with bold flavors, and the “crispy and juicy fried chicken here is the star of the show.”
They recommended trying the fried chicken with waffles and chili syrup or with smashed potatoes, gumbo gravy and ham-glazed green beans.
On the Kansas side, Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken was named the top spot. The Memphis-based chain has two locations in Kansas: 2816 W. 47th Ave. in Kansas City, Kansas; and 7935 W. 151st St. in Overland Park.
“Based on the Bonner family recipe from 1953, the chicken is slightly spicy, with a thick layer of seasoned crispy breading hugging various cuts, from breast and thigh to leg and wing,” the website said.
Other restaurants that made the list include Prince’s Hot Chicken in Nashville; Den Den Korean Fried Chicken in Providence, Rhode Island, and Nashbird in Oklahoma City.
Lovefood writers made their selections based on user reviews, awards, accolades and the firsthand experience of their team, according to the website.
