Nashville joint invites Taylor Swift to show Travis Kelce ‘real BBQ.’ KC is horrified
Oh, they make barbecue in Nashville?
A popular barbecue restaurant there has grabbed a tiny piece of the smoking hot Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce spotlight by taking a shot at Kansas City’s venerable ribs and burnt ends.
But their aim was a little off.
On Tuesday, Edley’s Bar-B-Que messaged Swift via social media: “Hey Taylor Swift, why don’t you bring Travis back home and show him some real BBQ?”
“We’d say he has a ‘Blank Space’ in the BBQ department. … We can show you incredible things,” the restaurant wrote on its Facebook page Tuesday.
As of Thursday the post was buried under nearly 3,000 comments, most from loyal Kansas City barbecue fans.
“Shots fired!”
“We good on bbq here in KC. Thanks!”
“I’ve had BBQ in 12 different states. Kansas City makes the best BBQ, hands down.”
“I’ve been to Edleys. Might be ‘awesome’ for TN, but it’s only average in KC.”
“Lived in Nashville for 8 years, absolutely loved Edley’s, the Kermit was my favorite sandwich from there, but Edley’s is nowhere near KC BBQ.”
“Don’t be basing Tennessee BBQ on Nashville’s wannabe scene. Central BBQ in Memphis is Tennessee’s claim to fame.”
‘We in KC make the very best, not saying other states don’t but here in KC BBQ is our right of passage.”
“Damn — local joint gets roasted to hell for trying to act like it can compete with KC BBQ. Engagement post success though: 100.”
Edley’s, which has several locations, was voted Best BBQ in Nashville four times by The Nashville Scene alternative news weekly.
The meats there are smoked “low and slow daily with white oak,” according to its menu. The restaurant offers beef brisket smoked for 10 hours, burnt ends served on grits casserole and “pork shoulder marinated for 24 hours in habanero pepper mash then smoked for 12 hours to succulent perfection.”
Sounds good on paper.
But Facebook user Max Gallaway responded with an invitation of his own: “Come to the World Series of bbq and prove it.”
Coincidentally, this weekend the World Series of Barbecue returns to the Kansas Speedway, billed as the world’s largest barbecue contest with more than 500 teams. (Find info at americanroyal.com/bbq.)
And while you’re at it, challenged Brian S. O’Saile, “bring the QB, too.”
Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill is 35 and in his 12th NFL season.
Kansas City’s quarterback needs no introduction.
