Story Behind Leonardo DiCaprio's 2013 Golden Globe Winning Film Gets a Big Update
The year was 2013, and one of Leonardo DiCaprio's biggest films (my personal favorite from the star) hit theaters. Directed by Martin Scorsese, The Wolf of Wall Street was a high-energy dark comedy based on the real-life journey of Jordan Belfort, an infamous businessman who ascended on Wall Street, only to crash hard with securities fraud and money laundering convictions.
DiCaprio starred as Belfort, offering up a masterful Oscar-nominated/Golden-Globe-winning performance. Starting as the slightly shy guy just trying to make it in finance, to the drug-fueled wolf, making salacious criminal deals, while running an HR nightmare of a brokerage, the movie was thoroughly entertaining throughout. By the time the credits roll, viewers learn that Belfort was sentenced to 36 months in prison in 2003. Additionally, the US government ordered him to pay $110 million in restitution to victims.
Fast forward to the present, 2026, and there appears to be an update on Belfort's real Wolf of Wall Street story. One that brings him a sigh of relief.
Jordan Belfort Done Paying for His Crimes… Literally
According to TMZ, Belfort is finally done making restitution payments for his crimes, bringing his 20-plus-year ordered payments to a close. In fact, the payments actually halted in April 2026. Speaking on the matter, Belfort shared with TMZ:
"For nearly three decades, I've lived with the consequences of my past and worked every day to take responsibility for it. Today, I can finally say that I completed my court-ordered restitution. It's hard to put into words what that means. It brings a sense of closure that I've been working toward for most of my adult life."
How to Watch ‘The Wolf of Wall Street'
For those wanting to rewatch all the entertaining chaos of The Wolf of Wall Street, or perhaps watch for the first time, there are multiple ways to stream it. The movie is available to stream for those with a subscription to Hulu, Disney+, Paramount+, or Prime Video. It's also available for free with ads over on PlutoTV. Trust me, this is one of those movies you'll definitely want to watch if you haven't. It's Certified Fresh with a Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score of 79%.
