Walker County Animal Control officers rescued three abandoned dogs — including one severely emaciated dog trapped inside a drainage pipe — from a Georgia cemetery on March 29. The discovery led to criminal charges for animal cruelty and abandonment.

A concerned citizen called to report that three dogs had been left at McWilliams Cemetery, located at West Armuchee Road and Smith Gap Road in Georgia, on a Sunday evening. When officers arrived, they found two emaciated dogs running loose through the cemetery, scared and hungry.

The most harrowing discovery came as officers attempted to catch those two dogs. They heard a faint sound coming from beneath them in a drainage pipe. Inside, they found an extremely emaciated third dog — one they would come to call “Miracle.”

Rescued Dog Named ‘Miracle’ Weighed Only 10 Lbs

Walker County Animal Control shared the story on Facebook, describing how Miracle had sought refuge underground.

“Severely emaciated, Miracle had crawled into a small drainage pipe—likely scared, weak, and searching for shelter after being left behind,” the post read.

Animal Control Director Tyler Bishop provided more detail on the dog’s condition, per FOX Chattanooga.

“She most likely crawled in there to get out of the elements, and while she was under there, became more weak, and especially without food for an extended period of time. We’re not sure how long she’d been without food. We were able to safely get her out to safety, and then immediately rushed her to a local vet where she could get the proper treatment she needed,” Bishop said.

Officers worked carefully and patiently to free Miracle from the pipe. She was too weak to move on her own. Once rescued, she was rushed to a local vet, where she weighed only 10 lbs.

According to FOX Chattanooga, the area is secluded and known as a place where animals are abandoned.

Criminal Charges Filed for Animal Cruelty

The case moved quickly. An update to the original Facebook post confirmed that officers located the owners.

“Animal control officers located the owners, and the dogs were surrendered to WCAS. Criminal charges were obtained for animal cruelty and abandonment,” the update stated.

In a separate comment on the post, Walker County Animal Control added, “Animal control officers have located the owner, and the dogs have been surrendered to WCAS. The investigation is ongoing.”

All three dogs are now receiving the support they need. “These three dogs are now receiving the care, food, and attention they desperately need,” the original post stated.

The identities of the owners have not been made public.

How the Community Is Rallying Around the Dogs

The Facebook post drew an outpouring of support from community members moved by the rescue story.

“Heartbreaking!💔 Thank you to the heroes who take the time and have the compassion to help these innocent fur babies. God bless you and all those that do extra to help abandoned, neglected and abused animals.❤️‍🩹,” one person commented.

“God bless you all. How desperate they must have been. They know you saved their lives,” said another commenter.

Walker County Animal Control urged anyone with information about the case to come forward. The agency noted in its original post that resources are available for those who need assistance with animals.

“Every animal deserves safety, compassion, and a chance to recover. ❤️🐶 Thank you to our animal control officers for their dedication and for never giving up on animals in need,” the post concluded.
