Royals fan Katie Castan made national news when she attended last fall’s Wild Card Game with a sign that read “If We Win, He’s Buying Me a Puppy!”

The sign depicted a Pembroke Welsh corgi wearing a gold crown, along with a blue arrow pointing at Castan’s boyfriend, Joe Onofrio. After the Royals won, the couple’s story was picked up by The Star, Sports Illustrated, ESPN and Yahoo Sports. Less than a week later, Onofrio made good on his promise and the couple adopted a 4-year-old corgi named Lucy.

Now Lucy is 5 and Castan and Onofrio are engaged to be married in September 2016. They live in a condo on the Country Club Plaza, where Lucy takes her daily strolls.

“She’s a total diva,” Castan says. “We like to say the house is her castle.”

Lucy loves treats, making friends with neighbor dogs and strutting around the Plaza in a Royals bandana that gets lots of compliments.

“I am the crazy dog mom,” Castan admits. “I always call her my baby.”

Castan loves her corgi’s cute, stumpy legs and winning personality. Lucy’s only drawback, she says, is her constant shedding: “We ended up getting a Roomba — the pet series one — and it runs every single day.”

The Kansas City couple plan to take Lucy to Bark in the Park on Sept. 22 at The K. But they’re not sure yet if she’s invited to the wedding.

“I’m not that crazy,” Castan says. “But she might be in the engagement pictures.”
