Retro prom photos: Bouffants, lapels and high school sweethearts

The elaborate “proposals” have been staged, the beautiful gowns chosen, tuxes and limos rented, the red carpets rolled out. High school prom season is in full swing.

As Billy Joel sang back in a song popular as an ’80s prom theme: “This Is the Time” to remember.

We asked FYI readers to show us what their proms looked like when they were in high school. Send us your old prom photos, we asked.

If we had dialed up “Pennsylvania 6-5000” or thrown “Three Coins in a Fountain” for luck we couldn’t have found any more sentimental photos from our readers’ proms gone by.

Baby boomers are especially sentimental. We got lots of photos from the disco ’70s.

And who knew that so many people ended up marrying their high school prom dates?

So say “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” and revel in these throwback images of wide lapels, white gloves, hoop skirts, wrist corsages and bouffant hair.

Because “Precious and Few” are these moments we share with you today.
