Step right up to Urban Owl Co., where a wide variety of doormats greet you.

Owner Megan Nelson of Kansas City paints designs and messages on the natural-fiber canvases, starting at $35. She has taken the doormat concept and run home with it, treading into every season, most holidays (several for Thanksgiving) and many categories, such as Wanderlust: “Adventure Awaits.”

Adopting pets is a personal passion for Nelson, and some proceeds from the Animal Obsessed mats — including “Adore-A-Bull” and “Dogs Welcome People Tolerated” — go to KC Pet Project and Missouri Pit Bull Rescue.

Nelson has designed and handcrafted other products such as candles and soap. So why doormats?

“I want wherever I live to feel like home,” said Nelson, who founded Urban Owl Co. earlier this year and has lived in a number of apartments. “A doormat lays the groundwork.”

Personalized options are available, perfect for wedding and housewarming gifts. Deer antlers and a last name, or an arrow underneath initials, are each $45. Completely custom mats are $55.

The doormats, all tan, are coir, a natural renewable material made of coconut fibers. They feature non-slip latex backings and are painted in more than 15 colors of weather-resistant paint protected with UV sealant.

Urban Owl Co. mats are starting to become available through regional retailers, but the bulk of offerings are at UrbanOwlCo.com.
