Street racers tie up traffic near Kansas City on I-435
Souped-up cars and racing motorcyclists buzzed other drivers and created a roving traffic jam on Interstate 435 in Platte County early Sunday evening.
Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers, assisted by air patrol, on Sunday were looking for the operators of about 40 or more motorcycles and street-racing cars who blocked three lanes of highway traffic to record video of each other performing stunts about 6 p.m.
Collin Stosberg, spokesman for the highway patrol, said the riders were weaving through traffic, racing and performing motorcycle stunts.
“They think it’s fun to show off for their friends,” he said, “but it’s really dangerous and it caused quite a traffic backup.”
He said if they’re caught, the racers could be arrested for impeding the flow of traffic and careless driving.
Stosberg said the Highway Patrol asks that motorists who witness reckless driving to call *55 and report the incident.
