Wrong-way crash victim dies weeks later

The victim of a head-on collision involving a driver traveling the wrong way on Interstate 29 earlier this month died this weekend.

Benjamin Shively, 38, of Overland Park died late Saturday at North Kansas City Hospital, more than two weeks after the crash.

The collision occurred July 2. Shively was traveling south on Interstate 29 when his vehicle collided with one driven by Justin V. Burkholder.

Burkholder, who was being chased by Platte County Sheriff’s deputies, was driving a truck that deputies said had been reported stolen from south Platte County. He was driving the truck north in the southbound lane near Kansas City International Airport and collided with the SUV Shively was driving.

Shively’s vehicle overturned on a bridge.

Both drivers were pinned in their vehicles. Burkholder was pronounced dead at the scene. Shivley was taken to a hospital.
