Hair stylist Molly McPheter—who is responsible for many of the lovely locks you’ve spotted in our sister publication KC Weddings—will debut a brick-and-mortar salon space, Roots and Branches, next month in the River Market. In advance of the opening, we sat down with McPheter to talk hair, salon décor and the importance of being green.

A: We are making a conscious effort to be as green as possible. Also, as a team our number one mission is to stay current with education. You can never stop learning and growing.
Q: The salon will carry products by Evo and Kevin Murphy and color by Keune. How did you decide on these three brands?
A: I have been an educator for an international color company for the last two years, and this job has made me understand the value of education—and how hard it can be to get in a booth rental salon setting. This was my number one criterion for picking products: finding amazing product lines that will help you as a stylist.
Q: I’ve never heard of Evo. Can you tell us a little about the line?
A: As far as I know, we are the first salon in Kansas City that carries Evo. And this line is amazing! I can barely keep it on the shelves. These products are sulphate-, paraben-, DEA- and TEA-free, and you can see a huge difference in your hair just after one use. Also all of the packaging is recycled—even the ink printed on the bottles.
Q: Paint a picture of what Roots and Branches customers will see when they walk through your door next month.
A: One of the coolest projects I have for the salon is a handmade chandelier covered in tree branches that will hang above the front desk. I have also tried to not have standard salon equipment. I’ve found a way to make our stations out of jewelry dressers and we’ll be using rehabbed doors for the front desk and for each station’s shelves.
