Celebrate the annual Kentucky Derby Kansas City-style at these local events

Mint juleps will be calling your name this month as the annual Kentucky Derby kicks off May 7. If you can’t make it down South, no worries- Kansas City has plenty of events planned for the race.

Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar

Don’t be afraid to don your extravagant hats and bowties at this Plaza restaurant‘s Derby celebration. The seafood spot will have a six by three foot TV to showcase “the greatest two minutes in sports” while you enjoy $6 mint juleps. Men and women who dress for the occasion will receive half off sparkling wine. Jax Fish House will also honor their regular happy hour specials from 3  to 6 p.m.

Tavern in the Village

Feast on specialty Derby Dishes at both Tavern locations Saturday. Guests are encouraged to dress in their Southern best while they munch on Tavern’s specialty dishes of Shrimp & Grits, Kentucky Hot Brown Turkey Sandwich and Bungalow Stew. Featured drinks include the standard mint julep, a Thai Tavern Julep made with Union Horse Reserve Bourbon, Tavern Sazerac featuring Union Horse Rye Whisky, and a Rye Old Fashion. Prizes will be awarded to guests for their attire in specific categories.

Kansas City Museum

A live band, Southern bites and yard games? Consider us there. The Kansas City Museum‘s Derby party promises to be a hit with a “Best Dressed” and “Best Hat” contest, as well as music by The Grisly Band. Enjoy eats from The Local Pig and cocktails courtesy of J. Rieger & Co., Tom’s Town, Union Horse and Restless Spirits. The icing on top? Dessert from Poppy’s Ice Cream.

Run for the Roses Kentucky Derby Gala

From 2:30 to 6 p.m. at the Lake Quivira Country Club, enjoy complimentary beer, wine and hors d’oeuvres courtesy of The Mission Project. A silent auction will benefit the nonprofit, which helps developmentally disabled adults to live and work on their own.

Kansas City Derby Fest 

Contribute to a good cause while cheering on your favorite horse at this annual event, which benefits the KU Alzheimer’s Disease Center. The events takes place at KC Live! in the Power & Light District, with festive cocktails and outfit contests starting at 3 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here.

Run for the Roses

The weekend wouldn’t be complete without St. Luke’s annual benefit at Sporting Park. From 4 to 7 p.m., enjoy Southern food and drinks (and the festive dress) while contributing to the St. Luke’s Heart Disease in Pregnancy Program. Buy tickets for the May 7 event here.
