European Styling, Midwestern Hospitality

Men in suits adjusted their ties; the bartender straightened cocktail napkins and wiped down the bar for the third time. The smell of newness wafted through the air.

As I stepped into the lobby of the new AC Hotel in Westport (only the second of its kind in the U.S.) on the morning of its grand opening, it was apparent that each person involved in this new, millennial-minded hotel wanted every detail to be perfect. And it very nearly was.

A predominant feature of the new hotel is the AC Lounge. Bottles displayed in modernist cubbyholes greet thirsty patrons and the mirrored ceiling makes the selection seem endless. My inner perfectionist delighted at every label perfectly centered and forward facing. In keeping with popular bar trends, the AC Lounge offers wine on tap in addition to their signature Kansas City cocktail featuring Dark Horse white whiskey, St. Germain and citrus simple syrups: The Battle of Westport. Sweet and salty snacks along with items such as prosciutto toasts can also be ordered from the Small Plate Menu.

The 123 rooms at the AC Hotel in Westport uphold the sleek, minimalist European styling that the original AC Hotels throughout Spain, Italy, Portugal and France established. The rooms aren’t cluttered with unnecessary décor or cramped with closets and drawers that you’ll never fill. Instead, the modestly-sized rooms have been appointed with contemporary details such as GROHE Rain Shower showerheads, Italian marble and Bluetooth-enabled speaker systems.

Unlike hotels that aim to be a one-stop-shop for dining, sleeping and entertainment, AC Hotels want to ensure that their guests are perfectly situated to get out and explore local culture. As proud as they are of the amenities inside the Westport hotel, they’re just as excited about what guests can experience outside the hotel. Whether you’re a Kansas City native or visiting for the first time, the AC Hotel in Westport brings KC staples such as Kelly’s and the Tivoli as well as buzz-worthy newbies like Char Bar and Ca Va steps away from your temporary front door.

Although the hotel prides itself on its minimalist design and perfect “base camp” location, it’s not short on on-site amenities. Should you need to mix business and pleasure, three 840 square-foot meeting rooms with state-of-the-art integrated technology are available. An on-site fitness room, a media room, complimentary Wi-Fi and valet parking are also at your disposal.

Another point of pride for the hotel is the AC Kitchen. With freshly sliced prosciutto, sweet and savory breakfast pastries and signature iced coffee, this hotel breakfast is actually worth waking up for.

Every new business has its “opening night issues.” Outlets don’t work, servers call in sick, etc. On this particular morning, the elevator decided that we needed to become very familiar with its four walls and therefore refused to open its doors for nearly 30 minutes. General Manager Hugh Chandler immediately leapt into action calling maintenance personnel, apologizing profusely and maintaining a steady stream of conversation to keep my claustrophobia at bay.

If this experience was any indication of the hotel staff’s dedication to customer service, rest assured that you will be very well taken care of should any issues arise.
