Whether you want to go out for a casual stroll or are planning to walk to work, knowing your neighborhood’s walkability can help you prepare your route. Redfin, a full-service real estate brokerage firm, has outlined the top 10 most walkable neighborhoods using Walk Score.

Walk Score, which was acquired by Redfin in 2014, collects and interprets data using a patented methodology which determines the walkability of any address in the United States and some cities abroad. The data is often used by researchers to help with urban planning projects and to access public health, but it’s available to anyone who wants to learn more about the communities they either live in or plan on living in.

Using sources such as Google, Factual, Great Schools, Open Street Map, the U.S. Census, Localeze, and places added by the Walk Score user community, they grade cities and neighborhoods on how walkable and bikeable they are. They also generate a Transit Score, which measures the city’s public transportation. Walk Score also takes into consideration population density, how long blocks are and the density of intersections, in an effort to quantify pedestrian friendliness.

Walk Score is measured on a scale from 0-100 broken out into five classifications:

  • 0-24: Car Dependent where almost all errands require a car
  • 25-49: Car Dependent but only most errands require a car
  • 50-69: Somewhat Walkable meaning some errands can be done by foot
  • 70-89: Very Walkable meaning most errands can be completed by foot
  • 90-100: Walker’s Paradise meaning daily errands do not require a car

Kansas City has an overall Walk Score of 35, meaning that it’s a Car Dependent city that requires a vehicle for most errands. However, when you drill deeper down into the data and focus on specific neighborhoods, there are some areas that have a pretty decent Walk Score, ranging from Very Walkable to Walker’s Paradise.

Here are the most walkable neighborhoods in Kansas City according to Walk Score and Redfin.
