A major opening at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is the highlight of a busy week for visual arts in the area.

The Nelson-Atkins will present the first major U.S. museum exhibition in more than 50 years dedicated to photographer Evelyn Hofer, whose photo books on European and American cities appeared throughout the 1960s.

“Evelyn Hofer: Eyes on the City” includes more than 100 vintage prints drawn from the artist’s estate and the collections of the Nelson-Atkins and Atlanta’s High Museum of Art, which co-organized and debuted the exhibition earlier this year.

The exhibition runs Sept. 16-Feb. 11; museum hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday and Saturday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday-Friday. Tickets ($22) include entry to “Monet and his Modern Legacy,” which will open. Oct. 28. More information at nelson-atkins.org.

“42nd Street, New York” from 1964 will be among more than 100 vintage photographs in “Evelyn Hofer: Eyes on the City” opening Sept. 26 at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
