Strawberry season is here, and these farms around Kansas City are ripe for picking now

Berry season is here. You’ve seen the dozens of farmers’ markets around Kansas City with their fresh produce, and now you can go pick your own fruits.

With National Strawberry Day coming on May 20, The Star put together a guide of where you can pick fresh strawberries from nearby farms. Be sure to pick strawberries that are bright, as the redder they are, the better.

Historic Weston Orchard & Vineyard

Where: 18545 Co Road H in Weston

When: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, weather permitting

May is strawberry month at the Historic Weston Orchard & Vineyard. Daily admission costs $5 per person, but you can buy individual season passes for $25 per person or a family pass for $50, which includes two adults and all household children.

Once inside, you can pick as many strawberries as you want with bags provided by the vineyard. All picked produce is weighed and priced per pound.

Admission to the vineyard also includes access to other amenities inside, including the Cider Bar and kid play zones.

The Fun Farm

Where: 650 N. Jefferson St. in Kearney

When: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday

KC Berry Fest opens Saturday, and strawberries are on the list at this family-friendly farm in Kearney. Once you’re done picking your strawberries, you can say hello to barnyard animals, ride down a giant slide, mine gemstones and get the perfect family photo.

You have to buy a ticket to get into The Fun Farm. Tickets cost $19.95 online and $24.95 in person; tickets are required for everyone ages 2 and older.

Gieringer’s Family Orchard & Berry Farm

Where: 39345 W. 183rd St. in Edgerton

When: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, weather permitting

Over five acres of strawberries lie at this berry farm. You have to buy a field access pass to get to the strawberry fields, and those cost $3 for everyone ages 2 and older.

The strawberries cost $4.25 per pound and containers cost 50 cents. You can’t bring your own containers inside for food safety reasons.

After you have your strawberries, you can take your children to the play area while you relax in the shade.

Stone Briar Farms

Where: 9035 Edgerton Road in De Soto

When: Hours vary depending on the weather. Check their social media pages for more information.

Strawberries at this farm cost $4.25 per pound and each picking container costs 75 cents. The farm is cash only. You don’t need to book an appointment for the farm, but you do need to leave your pets at home.

Wohletz Farm U-Pick Strawberry Patch

Where: 1831 N 1100 Road in Lawrence

When: Times vary, check their website to find availability

This strawberry patch in Jayhawk territory requires visitors to sign up for a time to pick strawberries. You can sign up for their email list or call 785-331-3468 to find times.

Once you have a time booked, you can pick all the strawberries your heart desires. Strawberries are priced at $3.99 per pound and the farm only accepts cash or checks. The farm also provides boxes for your picked strawberries.
