Building a custom home with Madi Mali Homes can be rewarding
Some people are intimidated by the thought of creating a truly custom home. They dream of a home that has everything they want, that fits their lifestyle and doesn’t look like every other home in the neighborhood. However, they fear the process is going to take too long, cost too much and be overwhelming.
The team at Madi Mali Homes wants to dispel those fears. This innovative custom builder wants designing and building a custom home to be a fun process for everyone involved and the result to be a home the owner will enjoy for years to come. They also want the client to be aware of the costs, from the start to completion, with few surprises along the way. And that they can get it all done, from the initial design to the completed home, within a year.
Madi Mali Homes has more than a decade of experience building custom homes throughout Kansas City and provides a high level of expertise in this arena. Troy A. Moore, who founded the company in 2003, is the third generation of his family in the construction industry. He graduated from Indiana State University with degrees in Construction Management and Architecture Technology. Before moving to Overland Park, where he has worked as a project estimator and building inspector, he worked on the West Coast for a consulting firm specializing in high-level construction personnel. Moore named Madi Mali Homes for his two daughters, Madison and Malerie.
Fred Powers, Madi Mali Homes’ trim carpenter, has 26 years of experience in the industry and has successfully run his own trim business, Fred Powers Construction, for the past 20 years. Kelly Stripling, the office manager and a designer, is a former teacher and accomplished muralist, faux-finisher and designer. Her work has been featured in homes all over Kansas City, including multiple Parade of Homes award-winners and two KC Symphony Designer’s Showhouses. Tammy Gros, the fourth member of the team, has a degree in Interior Design from the University of Kansas and has her real estate license with ReeceNichols, providing her the unique ability to help clients not only design the interior of their new Madi Mali home, re-design their existing space or stage and sell their current home.
These four team members are available to help Madi Mali clients through the process of building a home that is truly unique. It begins with an initial consultation where the clients explain what they want in their new home and the design that works best for their lifestyle. Moore draws an initial design, and then works with an architect and the owner to complete the specifications. This process can take a few months before permits are issued and building begins. Construction takes about nine months, which is consistent with most other non-custom builders in similar price points.
Stripling said, “Many people believe building a custom home is out of their price range, so they settle for a production home that looks like many others in the subdivision.”
“Building a custom home can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be,” Moore explained. “The average price for one of our homes varies, depending on the client. Although we’ve built homes from the $400,000s to over $1 million, right now we’re building a new home for a client in the mid-$300,000 range. He wanted something that didn’t look like the other, production homes in the neighborhood so we designed and built something unique that would stand out from the crowd.”
Moore said he encourages clients to spend the most on things that aren’t easily changed, such as hiring a good framer, good windows, roof, wiring, pluming and insulation. Then economize, if necessary, on things that are easily changed later, such as light fixtures and faucets.
All members of the team enjoy working with the clients, getting to know them and helping them through the building process. They recognize the importance of not overbooking jobs and schedules to ensure they can devote enough time and care to each project.
Gros stated, “The team is adamant about careful attention to every detail, right down to being available after the client moves in to help with furniture placement and hanging art on the walls.”
In fact, Madi Mali recently expanded its business to include TKTF Furnishings, custom-designed furniture and accessories built especially for the homes the company builds and soon to be available on its website.
In addition to building custom homes, Madi Mali Homes offers interior design services, complete home remodeling and room additions, bringing the same quality and design expertise to these ventures as it does to the custom homes. The team has also used its talents to design office space for companies.
A number of awards and magazine covers are displayed in the Madi Mali Homes’ office at 8625 College Blvd., Overland Park, a testament to the creativity and quality of its work. Madi Mali Homes also designed three rooms for the most recent Kansas City Symphony Designers’ Showhouse and has received interest in introducing its dynamic team to a national audience.
