Darol Rodrock’s unique history — both personal and professional — has led to a legacy unequaled in Kansas City residential real estate. With more than 35 years in the business and some 80 developments with more than 30,000 homeowners, Rodrock has stood by his lifelong commitment to creating exceptional communities.
His success stems from the fact that Rodrock has worked as a teacher, a coach, a home builder and more. He raised three children and was blessed with many grandchildren. And he’s taken this wealth of knowledge and used it to build communities that foster the growth and health of families. They aren’t just developments to Rodrock; they are places where families can flourish.
Rodrock has had the rare opportunity to work on many levels of home building — everything from painting, home repairs and building — so he understands, from the ground up, what makes a solid home, and on a larger scale, neighborhoods that have a true sense of camaraderie.
This dedication to healthy neighborhoods is unparalleled. And it all stems from the fact that Rodrock has a greater appreciation than most for family, community and all that they entail. Rodrock grew up in the foster-care system, shuttled from one harsh home to the next. Seeing the worst in the human condition, Rodrock promised himself never to replicate such behavior. He also became acutely aware, as only the dispossessed can, of just what makes a true home. And he’s committed himself to providing truly one-of-a-kind communities that better families and the city as a whole.
Rodrock understands what a huge investment a home is for families. He strives to provide absolute value protection, protecting homebuyers. He fulfills this promise in a number of ways, making his communities absolute standouts in the Kansas City area.
As soon as streets are placed, Rodrock begins immediate work on the infrastructure and amenities he knows firsthand that families want. Zero-entry pools, changing cabanas, pergola-covered grills, picnic areas, well-equipped children’s playgrounds and richly appointed clubhouses, complete with workout facilities, are found in many Rodrock communities.
Knowing the importance of good schools, Rodrock sets aside ground for the building of award-winning elementary and middle schools.
Another concept Rodrock created was the unique Rodrock Development Moms’ Council. An array of family-friendly activities are planned thanks to the Council, including spring egg hunts, pool-opening parties, July 4th bike-a-thons and pumpkin-carving contests, depending upon the community. In December, families adore the holiday hayride and caroling event, which features huge Belgian draft horses pulling wagons down luminary-lit streets.
Rodrock himself admits that his Moms’ Council motivation is part professional, a lot personal. These gatherings help new neighbors get to know each other and have fun, but they also build a strong sense of community and help provide families — and importantly children — a safe place to grow up.
In all that he does, Rodrock is committed to building communities filled with not just houses, but homes. While he may be decades away from his difficult youth, Rodrock’s knowledge of the value of family and home has not changed. He, more than anyone, knows home is where the heart is.
And he’s extending his reach beyond the real estate realm and devoting his later years to helping make a difference in the lives of children in foster care. In January of 2014, Rodrock announced the formation of his own charity, The Darol Rodrock Foundation, to help children in foster care realize their self worth and overcome the loneliness and uncertainty they may feel. It was a daunting prospect for Rodrock and a departure from his role as Johnson County’s largest residential real estate developer. But the idea of giving back — in particular to a cause that helped shape his personal and professional path — was too compelling to ignore.
The Foundation, after careful consideration and thorough vetting, has chosen to align its efforts with Kansas Kids @ GEAR UP (KKGU) for the next three years. This fantastic organization seeks to help those aging out of the system, which is where Rodrock’s heart is likewise called.
Kansas Kids @ GEAR UP is a one-of-a-kind charity that sets up shop within different high schools throughout Miami, Franklin, Wyandotte and Johnson counties. There, walking the halls of the high schools, mentors interact with foster children on a daily basis, helping them through the ups and downs of school … and life. They keep students on track with their studies, provide financial aid and ACT/SAT workshops, travel for college visits and provide kids the support they need to succeed. The talented mentors “parent” these children and help them find their path.
With the support of The Darol Rodrock Foundation, KKGU can serve more schools, hire more mentors and provide a higher success rate for those in the foster-care system.
And this is only just the beginning for the Darol Rodrock Foundation: Rodrock has incredible plans in the works to improve the lives of so many area foster-care children.
Rodrock’s legacy is one of building better communities, be it through teaching, coaching, home building, developing communities or reaching out to those in need. His commitment and unwavering virtue applies to all with whom Rodrock does business.
He takes great care with his relationships and is renowned for having some of the longest-held cordial associations found among real estate agents, bankers, home builders and more. He remains surrounded by devoted employees, some of whom have been by his side for more than two decades. And now, through his Foundation, his good work will continue, making countless lives better and continuing his incomparable dedication to improving the community as a whole.
