Global star Pitbull ignites a bald-headed, sold out crowd at Kansas City show
Just as the weather begins to cool in Kansas City, Pitbull and Lil Jon helped folks enjoy some summer fun one more time.
Friday was the duo’s latest stop for the I’m Back Tour, with this show taking place before a sold-out crowd at the Morton Amphitheater. Fans wore bald caps of different shades with whatever suit they could throw together, serving as a reminder of why Pitbull is one of the biggest hitmakers of the 2010s.
Opening his set with “Don’t Stop the Party” was a fitting way to represent Mr. 305’s career. He is the life of the party. As he moved deeper into his set list, the show felt less of a concert and more of a night out in Miami. He even helped the crowd visualize what it’s like stepping into a south Florida club before he performed “The Anthem.”
At 45, Pitbull still shows exuberance in his face. He released his debut album back in 2004. Between songs, he cracked a smile without missing a step during his choreography.
This is the guy whose most famous tracks are blasting off the walls of frat parties. He knew everyone in the amphitheater was there for a good time, so it’s only right he kept that same energy with his fans throughout the night.
Pitbull knows his crowd. He isn’t at the height of his career anymore, and many of his fans came to relive his glory days rather than to see some of his new songs that they might not know.
While promoting his upcoming album, PITCOIN, which is set to drop Oct. 9, Pitbull performed the hit songs that people know instead of experimenting with newer tracks to see how the crowd would react. Some artists need to read the room and realize most fans don’t want to hear that.
Props to you, Mr. Worldwide.
While Mr. 305 was certainly the star of the show, Lil Jon played his role in getting the party started. Taking the stage before Pitbull, the Grammy-winning singer and producer acted more as a hype man rather than a full on performer.
His set mixed his own songs with other hit records, including Kendrick Lamar’s “tv off,” to lean into Lil Jon’s “Outta Your Mind.”
Lil Jon’s set was the weaker link of the two, mainly because his stage presence consisted of walking back and forth and jumping with the crowd. Still, he did an excellent job taking the audience back to the 2000s Atlanta crunk era.
One visual took us back in time as the screen displayed an old Sony TV while he dove into smash records like the Usher-led “Yeah!” and Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz’s “Get Low.”
Though the night was dedicated to partying and letting loose, there were moments of grief as well. A video montage dedicated to Lil Jon’s son, Nathan Smith, professionally known as DJ Young Slade, opened his set. Smith died in an accidental drowning in February, which Lil Jon explained happened as the tour was being planned.
“This year has also been the worst year of my f——g life. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to deal with in my life,” Lil Jon expressed in front of a crowd that comforted him. “I just want to say thank you to everybody that prayed for me and sent me positivity.”
KC Pitbull fans matches his energy and outfit
When Pitbull comes to town, it’s important to know that it is very necessary to wear a bald cap, a suit and some sunglasses to honor Mr. 305.
Kansas City, you absolutely understood the assignment.
Many fans dressed the part Friday, even adding fake facial hair to keep up with Pitbull’s appearance. Others went as far as to dress like a bottle of Fireball whiskey, a reference to Pitbull’s 2014 hit “Fireball.”
The outfit of the night?
That goes to Faith Zavala, who was dressed as the Earth in a tribute to Mr. Worldwide’s moniker. She had been listening to Pitbull since high school and was excited for the opportunity to hear the hits live.
While many people bought their bald caps and went about their business, Bryce Thurman of St. Louis had other ideas. He shaved his head bald the night before.
“It’s gonna happen eventually, right? So... expedite the process,” he explained.
Zavala, Thurman and the hundreds of thousands wearing bald caps or shaved heads helped make the evening even more of a moment. When fans can have something that connects them to the artists, it makes for a night to remember.
Pitbull closed the night saying, “When you put on the bald caps, you gonna have the time of your life.”
“This crowd is sick. Everybody’s wearing the bald caps, the ties. It’s like blending in almost; it’s so cool,” Thurman said.
Some takeaways from Pitbull and Lil Jon’s KC show
- After a wet day in Kansas City, Friday evening was breezy and calm at the Morton Amphitheater. While the weather didn’t affect the show, the lawn sections in the back were very muddy. I didn’t realize the grassy area was real grass and not artificial turf.
- I understand those were the seats people paid for and that Morton can’t control the weather, but is switching to turf possible for that hill in the future? It would be unfortunate for people to pay extra to rent a lawn chair or ruin a good blanket due to muddy conditions.
- Friday’s concert made me realize that the Morton Amphitheater seems to do well with artists from the 2010s era. I’m talking about the ones who may not be the biggest names in the game anymore but once were, and still have fans willing to pay to go see them.
- Ke$ha, Ne-Yo and Akon, and now Pitbull, are artists I’ve seen pack the amphitheater despite not being the youngest or the most-buzzing performers today. It’s nice to see that these performers still have the energy to do a show and that there are still fans willing to see them.
