If you’re thinking of catching an upcoming movie release, like “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” or “Project Hail Mary,” there’s a new way to experience films coming to Kansas City.

AMC announced that on Friday, March 20, AMC Barrywoods 24 at 8101 Roanridge Road in Northland will introduce the first 4DX experience in Kansas City theaters. The technology adds a physical dimension to the film-watching experience, with viewers being paired with motion-based seating that has over 21 environmental affects.

The elements can be felt at specific times during the film, with effects like wind, water, snow, vibration and scent, synchronized to the on-screen action. AMC describes the technology as a way to enhance action, movement and atmosphere without changing the filmmaker’s original intent.

“As audiences continue to seek out premium experiences, formats like 4DX allow us to expand how films can be enjoyed by guests in our theaters,” Cynthia Pierce, a senior vice president at AMC said in a press release. “We’re excited to bring this innovative experience to the Kansas City market and introduce guests to a new way to experience movies on the big screen.”

Upcoming films that will be offered in 4DX viewing include “Project Hail Mary,” “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” and “Toy Story 5.” The AMC website shows that theaters in Atlanta, Denver, Houston and Washington, D.C., will also be getting 4DX implemented for select showings.

Tickets for AMC Barrywoods 24 can be found on the AMC website. Tickets to watch “Project Hail Mary” in 4DX are $18.39 for adults and $15.99 for children.
