Comedian shouts out this Kansas City food after show — but has one regret

One well-known comedian enjoyed his brief time in Kansas City, despite trying to convince guests at his show that it’s indistinguishable to another Midwest city.

Daniel Tosh, whose big break came in 2001 following an appearance on “The Late Show with David Letterman” and later hosted internet clip show “Tosh.0,” brought his stand-up comedy tour to Kansas City Music Hall on Thursday, June 17.

The comedian discussed the stop, along with other venues he visited in the Midwest, during his tour on his latest podcast episode Tuesday, July 15.

Some of his highlights included taking his father-in-law to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, and eating at this popular barbecue restaurant in Kansas City. Here’s what the comedian said about the city during his visit.

Best barbecue in Kansas City?

Kansas City was the first stop of his tour, which resumes Oct. 4, and Tosh said he enjoyed the crowd, the food and his hotel.

Spending just 24 hours in town, he and his crew stopped at midtown barbecue restaurant Q39, and Tosh said he wondered if people would agree that it’s one of the top barbecue spots in the city.

While he said it was great, he lamented the fact that they were out of sausage. He asked the restaurant to send him some if they’re on Goldbelly, a food service where restaurants can ship their meals to patrons around the United States.

A night in the Crossroads

Tosh says he stayed at Crossroads Hotel for his one night in Kansas City, and he gave props to XR, one of the restaurants inside the hotel. He said the pizzas were delicious, but that the charred cucumber salad stole the show.

“It was unbelievable,” Tosh said. “I’m calling it one of my top three favorite salads ever.

“Tell me how to make it, Crossroads, so I can duplicate it at home. That salad was delicious.”

Comparisons to other Midwest cities

Most of the podcast is reserved for his experiences in cities like Kansas City and Omaha, Nebraska, but he does give a snippet at some of his on-stage material at the 9-minute mark in the episode.

During Tosh’s standup set, he congratulated Kansas City for its sports team winning the NBA Championship.

But, of course, Kansas City doesn’t have an NBA team. The Oklahoma City Thunder won their first championship as a franchise in the city on June 22.

“You can’t convince me Oklahoma City and Kansas City are different places and if you do, I’ll punch you in the face,” Tosh said.

During this joke, Tosh said he used a slur sometimes used toward people with disabilities. Afterward, on the podcast, he apologized for using it on his podcast and said he “probably shouldn’t have said it.”
