Iconic author’s visit to Kansas City will have big crowd. Here’s how you can tune in
The Kansas City Public Library is expecting its largest crowd ever for a literary event when Margaret Atwood, author of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” speaks Tuesday at Unity Temple on the Plaza.
Atwood’s appearance, the final event in the library’s 150th anniversary speaker series, was moved from the library’s downtown location because of Taylor Swift-like demand.
The public claimed all the original free tickets within 60 seconds when they were made available earlier in 2024, and an overflow seating area filled within 10 minutes. Atwood fans claimed the added tickets at Unity Temple, which seats about three times as many people as the library, in two hours on Tuesday, Sept. 17.
Abby Yellman, library director and chief executive, said: “With this incredible outpouring of enthusiasm, we are thrilled to welcome as many people as possible to hear directly from Atwood on the themes that resonate throughout her work: libraries as bastions of knowledge, the importance of intellectual freedom and the critical role of storytelling in preserving individual rights and freedoms. What better way to celebrate 150 years.”
Atwood has written more than 40 books, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry and short stories. “The Handmaid’s Tale,” her 1985 dystopian novel, was turned into an award-winning television series.
The 84-year-old Canadian author will discuss her work and life and why libraries are essential with the library’s Kaite Stover. The event will be available via livestream; people can register at kclibrary.org/events until the event begins 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24.
