Green Day unexpectedly sings with former Voice contestant at KC show: ‘Dream come true’
Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong gave two fans the times of their lives at their show in Kansas City.
The 90s pop-punk band played for just over two hours on Tuesday night for a packed audience at Azura Amphitheater as a part of their Saviors Tour. Green Day played the entirety of hit albums “Dookie” and “American Idiot,” along with select songs from the newest album and fan favorites.
It was during the fan-favorite portion that the audience stole the show.
Once they completed “Dookie,” Green Day went straight into “Know Your Enemy,” a popular song from their 2009 album “21st Century Breakdown.” During the song, they invited a fan on stage to help sing the bridge. After singing and handing Armstrong a bag full of friendship bracelets, the fan took the opportunity to stage dive into the crowd.
“They’re bracelets,” Armstrong said. “Oh my god, I’m a Swiftie.”
The fan, whose Instagram page is @prostheticpictures, identified herself in the comment section on the band’s Instagram page. She’s originally from Spain and has been to over 80 Green Day shows around the world.
“I was on stage for Know Your Enemy tonight!!! I will never get over it. My life was made,” the fan wrote.
‘Please let me play Good Riddance with you’
Another fan, who is no stranger to performing on a big stage, was left in tears after performing “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)“ in front of the Kansas City crowd to end the show. The band usually ends their shows playing the song with a fan Armstrong picks from the general admission pit section in front of the stage.
Ruby Leigh, a 17-year-old singer from Foley, Missouri, held up a sign that said, “I’m 17, please let me play Good Riddance with you.” It caught Armstrong’s attention once it was time to play the song.
Leigh and her family were at the Aug. 15 show in St. Louis that got rained out right before the band played “Good Riddance.” The same sign she was holding all night in Kansas City she held in St. Louis. Leigh, who learned of Green Day through her dad and sister, was upset that the weather conditions took the chance away from her, she said in a Facebook Live session after the show.
Leigh got her moment to sing with her favorite rock band Tuesday after she and her family bought tickets at the last minute.
Armstrong signed her arm and took selfies with her and bandmates Tré Cool and Mike Dirnt. The band later posted a snippet of the interaction on their Instagram page, which currently has over 100,000 likes. She also posted the full interaction on her Instagram page.
Leigh couldn’t hold back the tears when describing the moment. Her mom had to clarify that these were happy tears.
“While I was playing, (Armstrong) had me sing it, and he was like, ‘you’re f---ing awesome,’” Leigh said.
Her vocal talents were seen nationwide, as she was a contestant on season 24 of NBC’s The Voice, getting all four chairs to turn on her audition. She also performed at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville on Aug. 2. But performing with Green Day might be tied for the highlight of her year.
“That was, like, my biggest dream come true,” Leigh said.
Leigh got the signature tattooed Wednesday, with a portrait of Armstrong, the lyrics “I hope you had the time of your life,” from the song they sang together and the date of the show underneath.
