101 books of 2015 that will inspire, educate and allow you to escape

nnakahodo@kcstar.com

Looking back at a year’s worth of literature is sobering and inspiring. So many books, so little time!

We asked our devoted reading crew to send in their favorite titles of 2015 so you can use it as a reading or gift guide. From a children’s book celebrating the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to a thorough examination of the rise of the Islamic State in the Middle East to Toni Morrison’s 11th novel, we offer 101 ways you can escape, learn and teach.

This year’s list is brought to you by: The Star’s Brian Burnes, who writes the weekly Readorama column; Cindy Hoedel, visual art and lifestyle writer; Sharon Hoffmann, FYI and movies editor; Jeneé Osterheldt, lifestyle columnist; Steve Paul, editorial page editor; and Mary Schulte, photo editor. The newspaper’s book reviewers Kevin Canfield, Liz Cook, Jeffrey Ann Goudie, Anne Kniggendorf, Denise Low and Christine Pivovar. Our fall UMKC interns Anders Carlson and Angela Lutz, and Kaite Stover of the KC Public Library. The New York Times and Washington Post also contributed to the list.
