One of the nation’s foremost experts on Lewis Carroll comes to Kansas City this week to kick off the two-month Great City | Great Read celebration of Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.”

Mark Burstein, former president of the Lewis Carroll Society of North America, will speak about the 150-year-old classic in two sessions: 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Kansas City Central Library, 14 W. 10th St., and 7 p.m. Thursday at the Woodneath Library Center, 8900 N.E. Flintlock Road.

The Kansas City and Mid-Continent public libraries have joined forces for the celebration, with activities planned through mid-November.

“Alice” is also the current selection of the FYI Book Club. You have two opportunities to participate in a discussion of the novel:

▪ 2 p.m. Sept. 28, Smithville Branch, 120 Richardson St., Smithville

▪ 1 p.m. Oct. 3, the Rabbit Hole, 110 Southwest Blvd.

Register for either session by emailing Kaite Stover, kaitestover@kclibrary.org, or Paul Smith, psmith@mymcpl.org. The libraries have stocked extra copies of the book.

Other “Alice” events include UMKC film professor Mitch Brian’s talk about “Alice” in movies Sept. 23 and singer Angela Hagenbach’s performance of her original jazz work inspired by the novel Oct. 28 and Nov. 10.
