With the White Sox coming to town for the first time this season, the contest on Thursday is probably the Royals’ most important game of the year so far for some Kansas City fans. No, not because the Royals are trying to catch the first-place White Sox, but because this is also the home team’s first Buck Night of the season. Hot dogs and peanuts will cost just $1.

Opening Day at Schlitterbahn
Friday, May 27, at Schlitterbahn Waterpark
What better way to spend the holiday weekend than going to the beach (in Kansas). Or, if it’s more to your liking, taking a dip in a heated pool. Those are just two of the possibilities at Schlitterbahn, which also has the world’s tallest water slide (Verrückt) as well as lesser water slides and a river system connecting more than a mile of rapids, currents and tidal waves.
11 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday, May 27. Schlitterbahn Waterpark (through Sept. 5). 913-312-3110. schlitterbahn.com/kansas-city. $32.99-$44.99.
Zac Brown Band
Friday, May 27, at Sprint Center
It took the Zac Brown Band seven years to become an overnight success. That’s how long the Atlanta-based band had been performing when it was named the Academy of Country Music’s Best New Vocal Duo or Group in 2009. That was largely due to the success of “Chicken Fried,” a song the group originally recorded in 2003. The band now is one of country music’s hottest acts.
7 p.m. Friday, May 27. Sprint Center. 816-949-7000. sprintcenter.com. $49.50-$79.50.
Sporting Kansas City vs. D.C. United
and U.S. national soccer vs. Bolivia

It will be a busy weekend on the Kansas City, Kan., soccer pitch. One day after Sporting plays an important Major League Soccer match, the national men’s team will continue preparation for this summer’s Copa America Centenario. This is the last in a series of friendly matches before the U.S. team will open Copa America Centenario on June 3 in Santa Clara, Calif., against Colombia.
Sporting game, 6 p.m. Friday, May 27. Children’s Mercy Park. 913-387-3400. sportingkc.com. $20-$280.

“The Adventures of Mr. Potato Head”
Opens Saturday, May 28, at Crown Center Shops
Mr. Potato Head has been entertaining children for more than 60 years and has been a movie star for the past 20 years, thanks to “Toy Story.” Kids will have a chance to get to know the little guy up close and personal at “The Adventures of Mr. Potato Head,” a hands-on traveling exhibit created by the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum in Milwaukee.
10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday, May 28 (through Sept. 5). Crown Center Shops. 816-274-8444. crowncenter.com. Free.
Journey and the Doobie Brothers
Saturday, May 28, at Sprint Center
Not that anyone in the building will be keeping score, but Journey has sold 80 million albums and produced 25 gold, platinum or multiplatinum albums, while the Doobie Brothers check in at a mere 48 million albums and 24 gold, platinum or multiplatinum albums. In any case, both bands will take you back to your youth. Or perhaps to your parents’ youth.
7 p.m. Saturday, May 28. Sprint Center. 816-949-7000. sprintcenter.com. $29-$129.
Westport Roots Festival
Saturday, May 28, at Westport District

Bands will perform on six stages, presenting an array of genres ranging from bluegrass and honky-tonk to psychobilly and cowpunk. Festival-goers can pay for access to all six stages or to just one.

Celebration at the Station
Sunday, May 29, at Union Station
The last time the grounds in front of Union Station were jammed armpit to armpit with people was in November, and folks were celebrating a World Series championship. This celebration will feature the Kansas City Symphony and honor Memorial Day. It is the 14th year for the event, which includes plenty of preconcert activities and culminates with fireworks.
8 p.m. Sunday, May 29. Union Station. 816-471-0400. kcsymphony.org. Free.
“Heathers, the Musical”
Opens Wednesday, June 1, at Unicorn Theatre
Of the many late-20th-century comedies that were turned into musical plays, this one definitely has the most Heathers. It also might have the darkest humor. As in the 1988 film, Heather, Heather and Heather find their roost at Westerberg High challenged by Veronica Sawyer, who plots to overthrow their regime by any means necessary. The musical score is of the rock variety.
7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 1 (through June 26). Unicorn Theatre. 816-531-7529. unicorntheatre.org. $32.50.
