So who is this “Doctor Strange”?

The trailer for Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” aired Tuesday on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” The movie’s star, Benedict Cumberbatch, introduced it on the show.

Here’s a primer on the story.

In the comics, Stephen Strange is an arrogant surgeon who seeks alternative healing after a car crash destroys the bones in his hands. In the Himalayas, Strange meets the Ancient One, who refuses to heal him because he’s a self-centered jerk.

Only when Strange foils a plot by the Ancient One’s disciple, Baron Mordo, to murder his teacher does the Ancient One relent and agree to teach Strange. Created by legendary comics creator Steve Ditko (who drew the first Spider-Man stories), Strange debuted in 1963 and became a hit with the psychedelics crowd.

Judging by initial reaction on Twitter, fans are indeed psyched (the trailer already has 1.3 million views on YouTube).

Fans of Cumberbatch are also quite taken.

Trekkies know him from “Star Trek Into Darkness”; “Hobbit” fans know him as the voice of Smaug; and “Sherlock” fans know him as BBC’s Sherlock Holmes.

The film has also cast Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo.

But, as with all things, the movie is not without controversy. The original story was set in fictional Asia-land.
