The Royals announced Thursday that the alt-rock band American Authors will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the season opener at Kauffman Stadium on Sunday.

Who, you say?

Even if the name doesn’t sound familiar, you probably know the band’s most popular song, “Best Day of My Life,” and its can’t-get-it-out-of-your-head chorus, “woo-ooh-ooh-ooh.” The song got major radio play and has been used in commercials for the likes of Hyundai and, perhaps not so coincidentally, Major League Baseball.

The single is from the Brooklyn band’s debut album, “Oh, What a Life.” Other fan favorites include “Believer,” “Luck” and “Trouble.” The band will stick around for a concert at 8 p.m. Monday at Prohibition Hall, 1118 McGee St., as part of the tour to promote the upcoming album “What We Live For.”

But can they handle the national anthem? Lead singer Zac Barnett and his band mates were all classically trained at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music.

“I think we all wanted to write pop and rock music from such a young age, and Berklee’s cool, because it teaches you a lot of tools in music in general that you may not know,” Barnett told the Miami Herald. “We’re all classically trained, and we can all play each other’s instruments. So we have these tools and skills in our back pocket, and I think it’s always good to have those.”

The Royals will be introduced at about 7 p.m., with the World Series banner unveiled at 7:10 p.m. After the national anthem, the game against the New York Mets starts at 7:37 p.m. and will be shown on ESPN.

The Kansas City Symphony, which played the national anthem at the home opener last year, will perform at the second Royals/Mets game, which starts at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday. The Royals will receive their World Series rings in a ceremony starting at 2:40 p.m. that day.

Both games are basically sold out.
