Festivals crowd the summer events calendar
With the beginning of summer, it’s time to celebrate things. And in the Kansas City area, we celebrate almost everything.
There are festivals honoring fruits, vegetables, critters, beverages, national heritages, music and even a 19th-century anti-slavery activist (that would be the John Brown Jamboree and Music Festival on June 18-21 in Osawatomie).
Of course, we also have our many county fairs, but they don’t fire up until July and August. The Fourth of July also will feature a bevy of area celebrations.
Until then, the focus will be on variety.
The Jiggle Jam Family Fest kicks off things this weekend at Crown Center Square, where music for children (and their parents) is the main attraction.
The following weekend (May 30-June 1) brings us Festa Italiana at Zona Rosa and Rockfest, a huge rock music festival at Liberty Memorial.
Then things will really heat up the first full weekend of June with a blitz of events that will include Old Shawnee Days, Downtown Days in Lee’s Summit and the Vaile Strawberry Festival at the Vaile Mansion in Independence.
From that point on, not a summer weekend goes by without a festival or fair of some kind in the area, with the Kansas City Irish Fest wrapping things up Aug. 29-31 at Crown Center. That weekend also will feature the huge Santa-Cali-Gon Days in Independence.
If you haven’t found something to your liking by that time, you just aren’t trying.
