Ideas for putting some spring in your step
As we near this big, fat St. Patrick’s Day weekend I am ready to spring ahead into the fun.
We may have lost an hour, but we gained some sunshine and daylight. It’s patio time, already. Bust out those jean jackets and baseball hats and let’s get this season started right.
EatThe winter was so wicked, it’s been hard to enjoy the beauty of the City Market. Times are changing. And it’s finally ice cream weather. What better way to celebrate than a big, homemade ice cream sandwich of the artisan variety?
The Bite, which just opened Friday, has three varieties, with some hip-hop flavor for fun. There’s the Funky Cold Medina (triple chocolate), because who doesn’t miss Tone-Loc? Fig and Juice, a concoction of orange cream and fig that makes me sing Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice.” And my favorite: Flavor for the Non-Believers. I nicknamed it “Happy,” like the song, because the mix of strawberry balsamic and basil makes me want to clap my hands. Yes, I found an ice cream sandwich worth $6.
For this in-between weather, we need an in-between drink. Big Rip Brewing, a hidden gem in North Kansas City, has it covered. The Blackberry Gluten Free beer ($5) is a little bit of everything, a cross between a dry champagne, beer and cider. Did I mention you could bring your own food to this little bar?
And this weekend, Big Rip, 216 E. Ninth Ave., is joining in the Snake Saturday fun with a Keg and Eggs breakfast. It starts at 8 a.m. and is only $5. There will also be a tapping of Mint Chocolate Milk Stout. For more details, go to

SeeBoot season be gone! Bring on the sneakers at the 2nd Annual KCSneakfest, a convention of kicks and sole. Last year, more than a thousand sneakerheads gathered to show off their collections, buy and trade. This year, there will be even more vendors, more collectors and more style. Elite Air Jordan kicks, the elusive Marty McFly Nike Air Mag, hard-to-find limited edition Reebok Pumps? You will see it all. There will also be a shoe drive for charity.
