Meet the Middlers: The Colourist

The Colourist does more with less. The four-piece band creates big pop sounds similar to those of larger bands, starting with Grouplove, yet it does it minimally: guitar, bass, drums and keyboards.

The band from Orange County, Calif., is led by guitarist/vocalist Adam Castilla and its focal point, bash-happy drummer/vocalist Maya Tuttle, who has said a commercial for a documentary about Karen Carpenter inspired her to take up the drums. Together, she and Castilla render sweet harmonies amid shiny pop melodies.

The Colourist has drummed up some industry buzz, though its first album won’t be released until late March. You can listen to the single “Little Game” on YouTube. It conveys a sound that Interview magazine called “pop

joie de vivre

personified.”

The Colourist will perform at the RecordBar on April 3 (Thursday night). It’s an 18-and-older show.
