Tony Award-Winning Musical Extends Broadway Run Due to Fan Demand
After receiving a Tony Award for Best Musical Revival on Sunday, Ragtime has announced a "final final two-week extension," according to Deadline.
The musical, which currently stars Tony winners Joshua Henry and Caissie Levy, is set in the early 20th century in New York. Based on E.L. Doctorow's 1975 novel, the show "intertwines the lives of a fictional African American pianist, Jewish immigrant, and wealthy white mother with real-life historical figures and events," according to New York Theatre Guide. It first opened on Broadway in 1998.
The show's revival was originally scheduled as a 14-week engagement, beginning in September 2025. After already extending its showings, Ragtime is officially offering its final tickets, with the production ending on August 16 at Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theater.
Ragtime was nominated alongside Cats: The Jellicle Ball and Richard O'Brien's The Rocky Horror Show for Best Musical Revival at the Tony Awards on Sunday. The award was accepted by Ragtime's theatre director, Lear DeBessonet.
"We're in this work because we believe the arts are an antidote to despair, and we at Ragtime are so grateful to partner with the entire theater community in the project of building towards hope, empathy, and democracy," DeBessonet said during her acceptance speech.
During an interview in the Tony Awards Press Room, lyricist Lynn Ahrens paid tribute to the late Terrence McNally, who wrote the musical's book.
"Terrence, in particular, always wanted this show at Lincoln Center," Ahrens said. "It fits it so beautifully, and the times we're in did show [that] so beautifully. We set out, basically, to make a great American musical, all about the beauty of America."
Fans quickly took to social media after the musical won, expressing their excitement for the crew who brought Ragtime to life.
"Well deserved," one user commented on an Instagram post from Broadway Direct. "Don't miss this!!!"
"This is just so CORRECTT," another said.
"Tell the story," another fan said. "Congratulations Cast and Crew!!
