Sidney Crosby Was Leaving Practice When He Unknowingly Crashed a Marriage Proposal

Mathieu had spent months planning how he’d propose to Sandra. He even picked a grand venue — PPG Paints Arena, home of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

But standing outside the team’s practice facility on a January day in Cranberry Township, PA, he threw all of that away in an instant. All because Sidney Crosby had just pulled up in his car.

Mathieu and Sandra, a couple from Montreal, had traveled to the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, the Penguins’ practice facility, to watch the team skate. Sandra thought that’s all it was. Mathieu knew better.

The couple knew they wanted to get engaged, and Sandra had shared two dream scenarios for how the moment might happen.

“The first one is in front of my family when I do not know, and the second one is having what I love most at heart, hockey, being part of it,” Sandra said in an interview with the team, published March 11.

Mathieu listened. He remembered.

The Moment Everything Changed

His original plan would have made for great photos — a sweeping sports venue backdrop, an unforgettable setting.

But while the couple waited for players to exit after practice, Crosby — Sandra’s all-time favorite player — drove by and happened to stop right in front of them.

Mathieu knew the original plan no longer mattered.

“I knew that her favorite player was Sidney Crosby, and she didn’t know that I was going to propose,” Mathieu told the team. “Then, Sidney Crosby passed by, and she wanted to take a picture with him while I was getting ready.”

“She didn’t know what I was doing, but I knew that it was happening right now,” he added.

Sandra, thrilled at the chance encounter, turned toward Crosby for a photo. She had no idea what was unfolding behind her. Her son, Shayan, stood ready with the camera, capturing every second.

After popping the question, Mathieu gave Crosby a thumbs up — the kind of joyful, instinctive gesture that says everything words can’t.

The video went viral on TikTok, giving millions of viewers the chance to witness a moment that felt both deeply personal and universally heartwarming.

“We were waiting after the morning skate to try to get some autographs, and the captain came over to see us. I took the opportunity because it was magical for my fiancée,” Mathieu shared in a comment on the video.

Hockey Brought This Family Together

To understand why this proposal meant so much to Sandra, you have to understand what hockey means to her and her son.

Sandra has been a Penguins fan for more than a decade. Her love for the sport began when she watched Team Canada play in the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Canada, which consisted of two Penguins players — Chris Kunitz and captain Sidney Crosby — won gold that year.

Despite not knowing much about hockey at the time, Sandra took notice of how good Crosby was. That spark of admiration grew into something much bigger.

“When my son was 7 years old, I told him to pick a team that we would follow, and he chose the Penguins,” Sandra told the team.

Now 12 years later, Sandra and Shayan, now 18, are huge Penguins fans. Their favorite player is Crosby — the very player who unknowingly became part of one of the most important moments of Sandra’s life.

“The Penguins play a big chunk of my life with my son,” Sandra told the team.

“Hockey glued us together, and that’s how we spend a lot of quality and exciting time when we watch the Penguins play. Mathieu being a part of it brings a lot of fulfillment in our lives,” she added.

Thanks to the viral TikTok video and Shayan’s camera, no one has to take anyone’s word for it. They can watch it happen, in real time, and feel every bit of the magic for themselves.
