Kansas City speakeasy makes list of nation’s best hidden bars

Special to The Star

A Kansas City speakeasy in the Power & Light District has been named one of the best hidden bars in the country by lifestyle website Livability.

P.S., located in the basement of Hotel Phillips in the Power & Light District, made the list as the best secretive drinking spot in Missouri. The bar gets its name from its underground location, which used to be the art deco building’s mail sorting room.

Green velvet seating nooks, dark wood furnishings and a teal-tiled ceiling arch give this cocktail bar a glamorous charm that Livability writes “transports visitors back in time.” Low lighting and its location behind an unmarked basement door give this spot an “underground” feel—both figuratively and literally.

P.S. specializes in cocktails as well as serving a limited selection of wine, beer and table snacks. Its cocktails include the gin-based Jet Fuel featuring maraschino liqueur and creme de violette, and the vodka-based Summers Reminder complete with raspberry and mint puree.

While it may be a speakeasy in name, no password is required to stop by this downtown spot. Guests can make a reservation online or simply show up—the bar opens at 6 p.m. seven days a week.
