Tyrann Mathieu cancels Friday appearance at Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting

Update: Kevin Strickland, freed this week after 40 years in prison for a wrongful conviction, will turn on the lights for the Mayor’s Christmas Tree on Friday. Here’s the story.

Tyrann Mathieu will no longer attend the annual Crown Center Christmas Tree lighting Friday as Mayor Quinton Lucas’ special guest.

The Chiefs player canceled his appearance due to schedule changes, Kristi Ernsting, a spokeswoman for the event, said Wednesday.

Lucas announced on Twitter Thursday night that Kevin Strickland would turn on the lights instead. Strickland was released from prison this week after he was exonerated for a triple murder that occurred more than 40 years ago.

The ceremony begins at 5:30 p.m.

The tree is decorated with 10,600 LED white lights and nearly 100 snowflakes. There are 600 bells and 890 ball ornaments adorning the tree. Crown Center Square will be decorated with 30,000 lights, according to organizers.

The event is free to the public.

Crown Center’s lights will remain lit until Jan. 3.
