KC events Nov. 8-14: Doris Kearns Goodwin, Gloria Steinem, Queer Eye, Glenn Beck
Doris Kearns Goodwin
7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at Unity Temple on the Plaza
Perhaps the greatest presidential historian of our time will be in town promoting her latest book, “Leadership: In Turbulent Times,” which explores issues such as whether leaders are born or made and the origins of ambition. Pulitzer Prize-winner Doris Kearns Goodwin has written books about Abraham Lincoln, Lyndon Johnson, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. 913-384-3126. Tickets are $30 through rainydaybooks.com.
Ron Campbell
4-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9; noon-6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10; noon-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11; at Leawood Fine Art
His name might not ring a bell, but chances are you’ve enjoyed his work. Ron Campbell was an animator on the Beatles film “Yellow Submarine” as well as director of the Saturday morning Beatles cartoon series in the 1960s. He also animated cartoons such as “Scooby-Doo,” “The Smurfs,” “Winnie the Pooh,” “The Flintstones,” “The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and others. He will make a rare personal appearance, offering for sale original cartoon paintings of the Beatles and other works from his 50-year career in animation. 913-338-4999, leawoodfineart.com. Free.
“Selections from The Oregon Trail Suite”
7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at Independence Uptown Market
Composer/musician Dana Mengel and a five-piece ensemble will perform selections from his “Oregon Trail Suite for Strings and Percussion” at a benefit concert organized by the Jackson County Historical Society to launch fundraising efforts to preserve the Pioneer Spring Cabin owned by the city of Independence. Mengel’s compositions follow early pioneers from Wayne City Landing across the prairie to Oregon City. Tickets are $25 through jchs.org/tickets.
Buck’s 107th Birthday Bash
8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at Gem Theater
Kansas City Royals greats Amos Otis, Frank White and Willie Wilson will pay tribute to late Kansas City Monarchs legend Buck O’Neil on a night that also will honor former Missouri state Rep. Gail McCann Beatty as the winner of the Buck O’Neil Legacy Award. The three-day birthday celebration will include a fashion show ($25-$50) at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and a free gospel-music show at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at the Gem. 816-221-1920. Tickets are $35-$107 through nlbm.com.
Gloria Steinem
7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at Uptown Theater
Even male chauvinists would have to admit Gloria Steinem — feminist, journalist, co-founder of Ms. Magazine and former Playboy Bunny — has led an interesting life. A movie about her is in the works, and a play, “Gloria: A Life,” is now on stage at the Daryl Roth Theater in New York. The Presidential Medal of Freedom winner will be keynote speaker at The Event benefiting Planned Parenthood Great Plains. Tickets are $75-$150 at partyforpp.org/2018-the-event.
Wynonna with Kansas City Symphony
8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at Helzberg Hall
It has been 35 years since The Judds burst on the national country music scene and made stars of Wynonna Judd and her mother, Naomi. They sold more than 20 million albums and won five Grammy Awards before Wynonna went solo because of her mother’s health issues. Accompanied by the Kansas City Symphony and associate conductor Jason Seber, she will perform her country hits and rock classics along with selections from the American Songbook. Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. 816-471-0400. Tickets are $45-$90 through kcsymphony.org.
Chiefs vs. Arizona
Noon Sunday, Nov. 11, at Arrowhead
If you aren’t familiar with the term “trap game,” this matchup provides a perfect example. Fans of the high-flying Chiefs are already fantasizing about their showdown with the Los Angeles Rams on a Monday night (Nov. 19) in Mexico City. But first there is the matter at hand — the ailing Cardinals. They are 2-6 but will be coming off a bye week, when teams generally play their best. 816-920-9300. Tickets are $75-$335 through chiefs.com.
Sporting Kansas City vs. Real Salt Lake
2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at Children’s Mercy Park
After finishing strong during the regular season to claim first place in the Western Conference of Major League Soccer and to earn an opening-round playoff bye, Sporting Kansas City managed a 1-1 draw at Real Salt Lake in the first leg of the conference semifinals. That means the team will advance to the Western Conference finals with a victory or scoreless tie in this second-leg matchup. 913-387-3400. Tickets are $68-$175 through sportingkc.com.
WWE Raw
7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, at Sprint Center
Professional wrestling’s best weekly show (USA Network) typically comes to town a couple times a year, but this appearance has at least two special bouts on tap. The featured event is scheduled to be a six-man match involving Roman Reigns with new Raw tag-team champions Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose against Braun Strowman with former Raw champions Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre. Raw women’s champion Ronda Rousey, the former mixed martial arts sensation, also is slated to wrestle. 816-949-7100. Tickets are $22-$81 through sprintcenter.com.
“School of Rock: The Musical”
Opens 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Music Hall
With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber (“Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Cats,” “Evita” and “The Phantom of the Opera”) and a book by Julian Fellowes (“Downton Abbey”), you might have expected the musical version of the 2003 movie about a high school rock band to take Broadway by storm when it opened in 2015. Unfortunately, that was also the year of “Hamilton,” which won 11 Tony Awards to none for “School of Rock.” The touring version has been on the road for nearly a year and will open the 2018-19 Kansas City Broadway Series. Runs through Nov. 18. 816-421-7500. Tickets are $47-$98 through broadwayinkc.com.
Glenn Beck
8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Arvest Bank Theatre at the Midland
It is fairly certain that Glenn Beck won’t provide any touchy-feely moments when he appears for his new book, “Addicted to Outrage.” The conservative political commentator, radio host and television producer promises an “intimate and frank” conversation about the outrage on both ends of the political spectrum. Appearing with Beck will be Stu Burguiere, executive producer and head writer of “The Glenn Beck Program” on TheBlaze network. 816-283-9921. Tickets are $29.50-$95 through midlandkc.com.
An Evening with the Cast of “Queer Eye”
7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Kansas City Public Library-Central Library
Fans of the hit Netflix reality show “Queer Eye” gobbled up hundreds of tickets to see stars Bobby Berk, Karamo Brown, Tan France, Antoni Porowski and Jonathan Van Ness in person near the end of their four months of filming in Kansas City. The Fab Five will discuss their newly released book, “Queer Eye: Love Yourself, Love Life,” and reflect on their experiences here. 816-701-3400. kclibrary.org. Sold out.
