K-State at Arizona game prediction

There has been little consensus on the point spread for this game.

Kansas State opened as a small favorite, but that designation quickly flipped to Arizona. As the week went on, bettors shifted the line back and forth several times. Most sportsbooks had K-State listed as a 1.5-point favorite as of Thursday afternoon. Maybe it will be a true pick-em game come kickoff.

That would be appropriate. This matchup of Wildcats, which won’t count in the Big 12 standings, feels like a coin-flip type of game.

K-State has not looked good. So far, its only win has come against North Dakota ... by three points. Chris Klieman’s team has struggled to run the ball on offense. On defense, it hasn’t stopped much of anything. K-State could easily be winless right now.

Arizona, meanwhile, has looked much-improved in Brent Brennan’s second year as head coach. The team steamrolled Hawaii 40-6 and then Weber State 48-3. But questions remain about Arizona, because most Big 12 teams would flatten those opponents. How will Arizona handle its first true test of the season?

It is hard to make a pick with conviction for this game.

On one hand, I can see K-State players taking an “us against the world” mentality into this matchup even though they are technically favored to win. They have heard nothing but criticism for three straight weeks. Maybe an extra jolt of motivation is all Avery Johnson and company need to get back to their winning ways.

On the other hand, K-State could have done that exact same thing in each of its past two games and failed to do so. Why should we expect this game to be any different?

Arizona is allowing just 91.5 rushing yards per game. That is not good news for a K-State offense that seems unlikely to have starting running back Dylan Edwards. Klieman has described him as “50/50” to play. Starting wide receiver Jerand Bradley will also be unavailable to help in the passing game.

It’s also worth pointing out that Arizona will benefit from a rest advantage on Friday. K-State was in Ireland three weeks ago. Last Saturday, its defense got beat up against Army. Now the Wildcats must travel west on a short week for a road game.

The schedule-makers have done no favors for K-State.

One thing I do feel confident about: This should be a shootout. Given the current trajectory of both teams, I give a slight edge to the home team.

Game pick: Arizona 38, K-State 33

Last game prediction: K-State 31, Army 17 ❌ (Final score: Army 24, K-State 21)

Season prediction record: 1-2

Season prediction record ATS: 2-1

Season record O/U: 2-1
