Holiday season is right around the corner, so if you’re looking for a new job before then, now’s the time to start looking.

Kansas’ unemployment rate currently sits at 3.3% as of September, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s up 0.5 percentage points from the 2.8% reported in April.

There are many ways to find a job, and if you’re open to working for the government, the state’s job portal could be a good resource for you. The Kansas state job portal currently has almost 500 jobs listed, 25 of which are based in Sedgwick County.

Shawnee County is the county with the most job listings at 190, followed by Pawnee County with 33 jobs and 28 in Johnson County.

Here’s a list of five state jobs based in Sedgwick County that pay more than $48,000 a year.

Rehabilitation Services Counselor

Agency: Department for Children and Families

Pay: $49,649.60

Job qualifications: Must have a bachelor’s degree and have at least one year of experience working with people with disabilities or experience in advocacy for individuals with disabilities.

Job description: This person will provide support to people with disabilities and assist in finding jobs for individuals and prepare them for employment.

Highway Maintenance Supervisor

Agency: Department of Transportation

Pay: $57,428.80 to $61,183.20

Job qualifications: Must have at least two years of highway or bridge construction/maintenance experience.

Job description: This person will be responsible for managing and directing all maintenance activities on the highway including directing equipment operators, as well as other management and oversight responsibilities.

Director of Facility Services

Agency: Department for Aging and Disability Services

Pay: Up to $95,000

Job qualifications: Must have some experience of construction management or renovation projects regarding health care, five years of experience in engineering with three years in a health care environment and three years of health care management experience. Education could be substituted.

Job description: This person will oversee facility operations and maintenance, which includes oversight of construction, record maintenance, operation of the hospital campus, coordination of physical plant services and more.

Litigation Counsel

Agency: Corporation Commission

Pay: $65,000 to $75,000

Job qualifications: Must have a law degree, licensed with the Supreme Court of Kansas and have experience in professional legal work (three years of experience preferred).

Job description: This person will advise the commission’s staff, evaluate issues, coordinate testimony, prepare legal documents, make arguments and more.

Assistant Public Defender

Agency: Indigents Defense Services State Board

Pay: $62,500

Job qualifications: Must have a law degree and be a licensed attorney in the state of Kansas.

Job description: This position will provide representation to adults who are charged with criminal felonies and are unable to affordrepresentation. This position is specifically for newer attorneys and will provide mentorship.
