Often, passing the CPA exam is the last step you need to complete to earn your CPA license, but choosing the right prep course is one of the toughest—and most important—choices you’ll make in your career. With core exam section pass rates as low as 42.8% for FAR, the right help can make a big difference. Plus, you’re not just preparing for the exams; you’re also prepping for your future as a certified public accountant.

UWorld vs. Becker CPA is one of the most commonly searched CPA prep course comparisons on Google. I have ample experience using both. Today, I’ll lay out everything worth knowing so you can make the right decision—for both your exams and your future career.

Provider Overview: Becker CPA Review Courses

Becker

If you’ve studied CPA prep for even just five minutes, chances are, you already know a little bit about Becker. It really feels like they’re the industry standard for exam prep. In reading through forums to study student experiences, there’s very much a sense of, “Becker can be expensive, but they’re the best, so it’s usually worth it.” And with features like 8,500+ questions, 200+ hours of videos, live classes, unlimited practice exams, success coaching, personalized tutoring, and an AI study assistant called Newt™, I started to get a picture of a comprehensive course that appealed to many learning styles.

Becker proved their reputation pretty quickly. This sounds like a silly thing to enjoy, but when you’re about to spend 300+ hours in an interface, you want it to be aesthetic, polished, and well laid out. The lessons were organized very cleanly: often a handful of video lessons followed by practice questions. Like UWorld, the instructors were fun to listen to, which made studying feel like less of a burden. Taking away some of that stress can make a big difference on test day (speaking from experience as a test-taker and a prep expert), and it felt like Becker’s simple yet comprehensive course was designed for a less stressful experience.

Pros

  • Interesting Instruction: Becker’s videos are some of my favorites for CPA prep. The instructors are excellent presenters; they’re funny and speak in an engaging, easy-to-understand way.
  • Live Learning: Becker is one of the only CPA exam review courses to offer live online classes in their prep packages, so they’re a great pick for that level of structure and interactivity.
  • Strong Pass Guarantees: The pass guarantees cover 3 of the 4 available packages, with two offering up to $1,000 back and the other offering a full refund.
  • Helpful Mobile App: Becker has an outstanding mobile app for Android and Apple devices, so I could work through material or practice whenever I wanted.
  • Tutoring and Coaching Included: Between 5-25 coaching sessions and 5-25 tutoring sessions are included in 3 of the 4 packages.

Cons

  • Gets Pricey: Higher-tier packages, especially the Concierge package, are probably out of reach financially for the average student.
  • Less Material Than UWorld: Though Becker CPA Review offers a ton of content, they have ~6% fewer practice questions and ~136% fewer video hours than UWorld.

Provider Overview: UWorld CPA Review Courses

UWorld Accounting

UWorld, also called UWorld Roger CPA Review, is a popular CPA prep option, and that popularity seems to have only grown since their acquisition of Roger Philipp’s prep materials. As a result, some of the estimated 502 hours of video content are truly enjoyable thanks to Roger. His energy, excitement, sense of humor, and ability to break down tricky topics were outstanding; as a result, I felt more like I was watching a YouTube video than a lecture as I worked through the materials.

Further, UWorld delivers helpful tools. They have a well-reviewed mobile app, 9,000+ practice questions, digital flashcards, performance metrics, and even live online boot camps. I felt a little overwhelmed at times, but the CPA exam is an expansive one; I might be more concerned if I didn’t feel overwhelmed. Plus, I’d argue that in my experience studying these courses and their students, it’s often better to have too much than not enough.

“3/3 with UWorld! Started studying for FAR last month, and gotta say, I’m loving Peter & his teaching style.”

Pros

  • Tons of Content: UWorld delivers ~502 hours of video content, as estimated by averaging 20 video lengths. They also provide over 9,000 practice questions.
  • CPA Prep Powerhouses: Though both courses have featured Peter Olinto, a phenomenal instructor, UWorld’s acquisition of Roger Philipp’s resources made their materials much stronger.
  • Boot Camps: I got to drill questions, key topics, and test tips live online with UWorld’s bootcamp. The camaraderie and interactivity made studying (even if just for this review) a lot easier.
  • Final Review for All: UWorld’s excellent final review cram course is offered in all three of their packages, making it accessible to all of their students.

Cons

  • On-Demand Only: Unlike Becker, UWorld’s standard classes (read: not the boot camps) are only available as recorded lectures.
  • Too Much Material?: For students with busy schedules who want a more efficient approach, UWorld’s “all in” approach may be too much.

Comparing Course Experiences: Becker vs UWorld CPA

Organization and Layout

Becker CPA videos

Again, I realize it’s a strange thing to be excited about, but something about Becker’s layout just works. It’s easy to look at, even for long periods of time, and I love the simplicity of working through each section without having to think. The deep blue, gold, and burgundy color scheme on a white backdrop is really visually appealing, and the loading speed was never slow. The clear labels paired with imagery made finding the right tabs so simple, and there’s even a library of tutorial videos covering the best ways to take the course. All in all, there’s really nothing to complain about with Becker’s layout.

UWorld study calendar

As for UWorld, I personally don’t think it’s as visually compelling, but it’s still polished and well-organized. That said, if you prefer something simpler and sleeker, UWorld may very well be more appealing to you. There’s almost a STEM vibe to it, especially when paired with the detailed performance analytics. It was fascinating to see how I was improving as time passed, moving from being brand new to the subject to approaching mastery. Once in a while, I’d come across a link that took a bit longer to load, but for the most part, everything was snappy.

Winner:

Becker has a slight edge, but if you prefer something simpler, you might enjoy UWorld more. Both load quickly in most cases, and the performance tracking for both is both interesting and genuinely helpful.

Practice Tools

Becker’s custom quizzes were easy to set up and adjust—I especially appreciated being able to filter by questions with video explanations. The questions were high-quality and felt close to what you’d see on test day, especially when comparing them to the real thing. They were roughly 25% more difficult, and I can see why their format, length, and subject matter can feel frustrating for some students. What really stood out was how efficient the answer explanations were. They were straight to the point, focused on the “why” behind each correct answer, and rarely overloaded me with irrelevant detail. That made it easier to review a batch of questions without getting bogged down. However, I already know this information, so it’s worth considering that my perspective might be altering the truth for students with less experience.

UWorld’s question bank, on the other hand, is vast—over 9,000 questions, which is more than you’ll realistically need. It’s only 500 more MCQs than Becker, but it’s still worth mentioning. That said, I can see why some students might like the abundance of material. Their SmartPath™ tool is also impressive, helping you identify weaker areas with data-driven benchmarks. The biggest issue for me was that the answer explanations were too long. To be clear, they very thoroughly cover the explanation; historically, though, I’ve gotten frustrated in school because we’d spend several weeks on something I (and some of my fellow classmates) picked up on day three. It was a similar feeling. However, again, less experienced students may prefer this approach.

Winner:

UWorld has the edge in question volume and performance analytics. But for students who prefer quick, actionable feedback, Becker’s more focused approach may be the better fit.

Video Lectures

UWorld video

This might surprise some people, but I found Becker’s video lectures genuinely entertaining—especially given the material. The instructors were engaging, upbeat, and explained concepts in a way that didn’t feel like a chore to sit through. They managed to strike a tone that was professional but not stiff, and the pacing worked well with the reading and practice sections. I also liked that the videos were broken into shorter chunks (averaging 14 minutes each), so I could jump in and out without losing momentum.

UWorld CPA video lecture

UWorld’s lectures are built around Roger Philipp’s energy (which you can see in this picture of his blurred hands!)—and he really is a powerhouse. He’s one of the most charismatic instructors I’ve come across in CPA prep, and his enthusiasm is contagious. When he was the one teaching, I found myself actually wanting to keep watching. Add Olinto, who is also present in Becker, and there’s real starpower in UWorld’s lectures. But outside of Roger’s segments, the quality dropped off a bit. Some of the other lectures felt flat, and the inconsistency in tone and presentation style made the course feel a little uneven overall, though that’s to be expected when you merge companies. Here’s the kicker, though: UWorld has ~502 hours of video compared to Becker’s ~213 hours. If you want more depth, more discussions, and more content, UWorld gets it done.

Winner:

This one’s close, because both deliver entertaining video lessons that don’t feel like “work” to get through. However, UWorld takes the lead due to their 135% edge for video hours.

Student Support

When I tested Becker’s support, I got a helpful, thoughtful response in less than 24 hours. They clearly read my question and tailored the answer to my situation—no canned response. Beyond just the help desk, Becker also includes success coaching and tutoring in their mid- and upper-tier packages, which adds real value. I tested a success coaching session and found it useful for staying accountable, even if it wasn’t particularly deep. Still, the structure and available support options were strong.

UWorld’s support team took a bit longer to respond—about 36 hours in my case—and the reply felt more generic. It answered my question, but it didn’t go beyond that or guide me toward related resources. There’s also no built-in tutoring or coaching unless you pay separately. The boot camps are a nice option for real-time review, and I did enjoy the interactive nature of those, but they’re not quite a substitute for true one-on-one support. However, the trade-off means you’re typically paying less for UWorld, which might be worthwhile if you’re trying to stick to a budget.

Winner:

Becker. Their support feels more integrated into the learning experience, especially with tutoring and coaching built into the packages. UWorld is fine for basic questions, but it lacks the depth of support Becker offers.

Final Verdict: UWorld vs Becker CPA

Let’s review.

Becker is the better pick for students looking for streamlined, step-by-step efficiency. With its mobile app, entertaining video lectures, and custom support options, it’s the best fit for CPA candidates who struggle to find the energy, focus, and time to sit down to study. Meanwhile, UWorld is strong in its own right, with a lot to offer candidates chasing more: more practice questions, more video lessons, and, in general, more materials to immerse themselves in.

Bottom line? The right course depends on your goals, lifestyle, and budget, and in my experience, it’s difficult to go wrong with either of these options.
