Sporting KC receives significant transfer offer for striker Dom Dwyer
Sporting Kansas City striker Dom Dwyer reached double digits in goals for the third straight season Sunday, when he scored a pair in a dominating 3-0 win against Seattle.
His development in Kansas City has caught the attention of clubs worldwide.
Greek club Olympiakos made a significant, multimillion-dollar transfer offer for Dwyer, Sporting KC coach Peter Vermes said Monday morning, but the club rejected the deal. Goal.com reported the bid was “in the neighborhood of $3 million.”
“There’s a lot of different moving parts in these deals — both for the club and the player,” Vermes said. “Everybody has to be comfortable with that. I would say right now, we’re not (comfortable) — neither of us are.
“So it’s simple: Based on what the structure and situation is, we’re not considering it at the moment.”
Sporting KC has received several offers for Dwyer after he enjoyed a breakout season in 2014, when he scored 22 goals. But none have made sense for all parties involved, Vermes said.
Dwyer is married to FC Kansas City player Sydney Leroux, and the couple is expecting a baby later this year. Dwyer is making $618,750 this season, according to figures released by the MLS Players Union earlier this year.
Olympiakos, the reigning champions of Superleague Greece, the top league in the country, has made regular appearances in the UEFA Champions League, a potential appeal for Dwyer, who was born in England.
Vermes stressed that he will allow a player to pursue other interests when the offer also makes sense for the club. In recent seasons, Sporting KC agreed to transfer Krisztian Nemeth, Kei Kamara and Uri Rosell overseas.
“When a transfer or deal is offered on a player, we’re always going to consider it in conjunction with the player. I’ve always maintained that with all the players at the club, so there’s nothing different with Dom,” Vermes said. “So did we listen? Sure. But it doesn’t mean we’re going to act on it.”
