We asked and you voted: The Star’s first ever poll of the best hot chocolate in Kansas City has officially closed. The winner? The beloved Café Corazón, located right next to the state line at 1721 Westport Road.

“We’re super excited about (winning), because we have really, really good chocolate,” said Miel Castagna-Herrera, owner of Café Corazón.

This family-owned business features Latin American specialties like imported coffees, traditional yerba mate, dulce de leche-stuffed alfajores cookies and other drinks and treats. Its menu boasts five different flavors of hot chocolate: Classic Dark, Spicy Mayan, Azteca Mexican, Dulce de Leche and Seville style hot chocolate with orange zest.

“Four of our hot chocolates use organic single origin peruvian cacao, and the other one is Oaxacan chocolate that’s handmade from cocoa nibs and cinnamon,” Castagna-Herrera said, adding that they also make their own whipped cream.

Café Corazón is opening a second location in the Crossroads soon, which Castagna-Herrera said will be bigger than their location on Westport.

Andre’s Confiserie Suisse, with locations in South Plaza and Overland Park, came in second place in our reader poll, which closed on Friday, Jan. 28. Local mainstay Christopher Elbow Chocolates came in third.

The other spots in contention were Jinkies! Coffee and Hangout in Overland Park, Black Dog Coffeehouse in Lenexa and Crows Coffee in South Plaza, Waldo and Red Bridge.

With snow on its way to Kansas City as early as Tuesday, it’s a perfect time to treat yourself to some warm deliciousness from one of these local businesses. Check out the other spots suggested by our readers here.
