Sporting Kansas City was drawn into Group 2 on Tuesday for the 2013-14 CONCACAF Champions League.
Sporting KC qualified for the continental club championship tournament — which begins with a round-robin, home-and-away group stage — by winning the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup last August.
Group 2 also includes CD Olimpia, which won the 2012 Apertura and 2013 Clausura titles in Honduras’ Liga Nacional, and Real Esteli FC, which are the champions of Nicaragua’s Primera Division.
Sporting KC is making its first official appearance in CONCACAF Champions League under the format that was adopted six years ago.
However, the then-Wizards played for the CONCACAF Champions Cup twice, reaching the semifinals of in 2002 and the quarterfinals in 2005.
Meanwhile, Olimpia, a 27-time league champion, qualified for its sixth Champions League, but the club from the Honduran capital Tegucigalpa only has progressed past the group stage once and has never advanced past the quarterfinals.
Real Esteli, which owns 13 championships in Nicaragua’s first division, is making its fourth appearance, but El Tren del Norte has yet to progress past the group stage.
Individual tickets for the home dates against Olimpia and Real Esteli will go on sale later this month after dates and times are finalized. Both matches are included as part of the season-ticket member packages.
