Sporting KC exhibition ends in draw

Sporting Kansas City forward Soony Saad scored a gorgeous header in the seventh minute off a cross from right back Chance Myers, who made consistent threatening runs down the right flank during a Desert Friendlies battle with host FC Tucson on Tuesday night in Arizona.

Ultimately, the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

“We do some things really well, but we still have plenty of things to work on,” manager Peter Vermes said. “That’s what we learned tonight.”

Vermes singled out SM South graduate Christian Duke, who was Sporting KC’s first pick in the MLS Supplemental Draft, as a standout.

Duke and MLS SuperDraft first-round pick Mikey Lopez were strong after coming on at halftime in the midfield.

Besler earns first international cap

Sporting KC centerback Matt Besler, an Overland Park native and Blue Valley West graduate, made his first appearance with the U.S. men’s national team Tuesday during a 0-0 draw against Canada in an exhibition at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston.

Besler started in central defense alongside MLS Cup MVP Omar Gonzalez.

Midfielder Graham Zusi earned his sixth consecutive start, exiting in the 63rd minute, while Benny Feilhaber, who Sporting KC acquired in a trade last month with the New England Revolution, subbed on at halftime.

Schedule change

Sporting KC lost a nationally televised game Tuesday when the kick time for its matchup May 12 at the Houston Dynamo was changed to 7 p.m.

Originally, the game was scheduled for 3 p.m. on ESPN, but it will now be shown on KSMO.
