Hey, soccer fans, sports folk and general friends of The Kansas City Star: We’re pleased to announce the next step in the evolution of The Full 90 soccer blog at KansasCity.com and our Extra Time KC app.
That’s right, the writer and soccer aficionado already known to some of you as a regular observer of Sporting Kansas City and the soccer scene at large is coming aboard to take up where his esteemed predecessor, Charles Gooch, left off.
In the space of The Full 90 blog as well as via Twitter (follow @TheFull90, if you don’t already), Tate will keep you up to date on the stories, trends and plain old interesting things happening in the world of soccer both across KC and around the globe. He’ll work pretty closely with our soccer writers (Sam McDowell and Kathleen Gier) to bring you the additional insight you’ve come to appreciate from The Full 90.
So don’t be a stranger. Drop him a line via Twitter or email (email@example.com) and say hello.
And tap here to download The Star’s free Extra Time KC soccer app for iOS and Android devices.
Tate Steinlage, in his own words
In 2010, The Full 90 came to fruition with its first post on the Kansas City Star’s website. That same year, Kansas City’s Major League Soccer franchise rebranded and set in motion the soccer culture present today.
Of course, Charles Gooch couldn’t have seen that coming then. He simply wanted a space to cover the beautiful game. At the time, MLS was an afterthought in sports and sports media, yet Gooch nagged his editors for a space to convey his thoughts and analysis.
After five years, Gooch has moved on. But as he stated in July when he announced his departure, The Full 90 will still live on. Today, I’m excited and honored to announce that I am the new Full 90 curator.
Some of you may know me from Twitter, SBI Soccer or SB Nation. A few of you may even know me from all three, to which I say, “Why are you stalking me?”
Before I go any further, I must say this: Gooch has been a friend of mine since I began covering Sporting Kansas City during its championship season in 2013. He welcomed me to the press box, talked (read: argued) NBA with me and ultimately recommended me for this position.
I can’t thank him enough.
Like many of you, I’ve read The Full 90 for several years. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to continue its coverage of soccer throughout the Midwest and the world alongside the excellent sports staff at The Star. I hope to have you all along for the ride, too.
A little bit about me: I began covering soccer in 2013 for SB Nation. A few months after Sporting KC lifted the MLS Cup, I moved over to SBI Soccer, where I’d been a beat writer ever since. Outside of soccer, I also cover Kansas State athletics for The Associated Press.
In addition to running The Full 90 blog for The Star, I will also be handling The Full 90 twitter account (yay: GIFs and memes!). Some of this content will be familiar, a lot like what you’ve read over the years. Some of it will be brand new. Either way, I’d love to hear your suggestions for blog content.
Again, I’m eager to get started and grateful for the opportunity. Welcome to The Full 90.
