There aren’t a lot of players in Major League Soccer with resumes listing Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy. But Oriol Rosell’s resume, Sporting Kansas City’s latest signing, certainly does.
Kansas City announced that it had signed the 20-year-old midfielder on Thursday. Rosell (it’s pronounced ew-REE-all rohz-EL) spent six years with Spanish giants FC Barcelona playing professionally for Barcelona B in Spain’s second division.
“Oriol comes from arguably the best soccer school and environment a player can be a part of in Barcelona," said Sporting Kansas City manager Peter Vermes on the team’s website. "Adding him as another midfielder will help raise the bar on a daily basis within our roster and add a lot depth in the middle for us."
Rosell has an impressive soccer lineage. He was signed at age 12 by Real Madrid, played youth soccer with RCD Espanyol and was on the Barca youth team that won the 2007 Nike Cup.
He regularly trained at Camp Nou with the Barcelona senior squad during the 2011 pre-season and was on the 27-player roster for the team’s U.S. tour that year.
His first official appearance in Kansas City will be Friday morning at the Sporting Club Training Center in Swope Park.
