Lawrence Olum made his fourth straight MLS start Friday at centerback for Sporting Kansas City, but his evening didn’t last long.
All-Star Matt Besler, who missed three games after undergoing an appendectomy June 8, returned to action Tuesday for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open quarterfinal win against the Dayton Dutch Lions, but he was not in the starting lineup against the Chicago Fire.
And Besler replaced Olum in the 19th minute after Olum suffered a groin strain.Sporting KC also is dealing with injuries to Bobby Convey, Paulo Nagamura, Korede Aiyegbusi, Cyprian Hedrick and Jon Kempin, the homegrown reserve goalkeeper who broke his ankle in training last week.
• Sporting Kansas City announced before Friday’s game that it had waived midfielder Luke Sassano.
Sassano, 26, appeared in 10 regular-season MLS matches for the club and scored his only goal in a 4-1 win at FC Dallas last season.
The oft-injured Sassano played for the New York Red Bulls from 2008-10, appearing in 38 games and making 25 starts.
He was selected by the Los Angeles Galaxy in the MLS Re-Entry Draft after the 2010 season and traded to Sporting KC for the rights to Frankie Hejduk.
• The Sprint Plaza at Livestrong Sporting Park took on an X Games feel before and after Friday’s game as the Monster Energy BMX Stunt Show took over.
A group of Australian stunt riders — Joe Scarborough, Todd Meyn, Shannon Farrugia and Thomas Gunn — performed half-pipe tricks and assorted other gravity-defying stunts.
