Seeking to add depth to a thin backline, Sporting Kansas City announced the signing of defender Lawrence Olum. The 27-year-old Kenyan spent a brief trial period with KC and will be added to the active roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate. He will not occupy an international roster slot.
Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
"He's a versatile guy, and we're looking for help in a couple different positions," Sporting Kansas City manager Peter Vermes said via a press release. "We feel that at this time in the year, we’re delighted to bring in a guy who’s just had a very good season."
After losing Daneil Cyrus to a season-ending injury and having to deal for a few weeks without starter Aurelien Collin, Sporting often found themselves with just three fit central defenders: Matt Besler, Julio Cesar and Shavar Thomas.

The signing of Olum will likely move Thomas further down the depth chart.
Olum played four seasons at Missouri Baptist University in the NAIA. He has played with the Portland Timbers in the USL, the Austin Aztex of the USSF D2 Pro League and, most recently, the Orlando City S.C. of the USL-Pro.Lawrence Olum
