Sporting Kansas City forward Ryan Smith is expected to miss the rest of the 2011 season for family reasons.
“It's never easy for international players who come to MLS when they have to live far away from their families. This situation is no different,” Sporting Kansas City Manager Peter Vermes said in a statement. “With some of the family issues that Ryan has back at home, he felt like this was the best decision for both him and his family, and we support him.”

The decision brings an end to a rocky 2011 for the 24-year old Smith. After recording three goals and seven assists in 26 games last year – his first with the team – he missed the first four games of this season while recovering from offseason knee surgery and recently missed the past three games because of a groin strain that flared up just hours before the home opener on June 9.
Rumors swirled last week that Mexican club Atlas was trying to sign Smith, but Vermes shot those rumors down, saying he hasn’t talked with Atlas about any Kansas City players.
Smith had one goal in six MLS appearances this season.
