The Full 90

TMK: KC's first home game of 2011, Besler's 'homecoming', Joplin benefit and more

Plenty of stuff coming your way this morning, let's not waste anytime.

Today's a match day for Sporting Kansas City. The game is at 7:30 tonight at the Blue Valley District Activities Complex. We'll have our MatchDay Preview up later this morning.

Defender Matt Besler

is looking forward to playing on familiar grounds.

Back in his high school days, Besler was quite the goal threat. Need proof?

Check out this video.

Sporting Kansas City will collect monetary donations tonight to support the relief effort in Joplin. Individuals who contribute money will be entered to win two Field Side Reserve tickets ($250 value) to the Livestrong Sporting Park home opener on June 9 for every $10 given toward the cause. All funds will go to four Midwest Select Soccer families who lost their homes in the tornado.

The Chicago Fire earned a spot in the U.S. Open Cup beating the San Jose Earthquakes on penalty kicks.

The Daily Wiz

reports that defender Luke Sassano has been signed through the rest of the season.

He had been on a temporary deal so KC could evaluate his fitness and fit on the team.

Sporting KC will be without the services of four players during the Gold Cup, and two of those players have already left. Defender Shavar Thomas (Jamaica) left on Tuesday and midfielder Stephane Auvray (Guadeloupe) left this morning. It isn't known yet when defender Roger Espinoza (Honduras) will leave; Craig Rocastle (Grenada) is expected to leave next week.

Peter Vermes a dreaded "vote of confidence."

Kiss of death -- Vermes'll be fired in five weeks.

In addition to KC's Open Cup game, there are three MLS games and a friendly tonight: New York vs. Colorado (7 p.m., Direct Kick/Match Day Live), Seattle vs. Dallas (9 p.m., DK/MDL), Los Angeles vs. Houston (9:30 p.m., DK/MDL) and

Portland vs. Ajax. KC's game this weekend against Colorado is a tale of two teams struggling to score.

According to Rapids coach Gary Smith:

"For whatever reason, at the moment there's a real blunted edge to our attacking play. And maybe . . . I need to bring in a witch doctor and get the guys fit again, the forwards."

Is MLS bad for the top American players?

According to one Sports Illustrated writer, "For years, MLS has done (Landon) Donovan a disservice by keeping him in a gilded cage."

Speaking of gilded cages,

the top bird in MLS flew to Manchester to try on his old colors in Gary Neville's testimonial game against Juventus

.

Not only did David Beckham play 90 minutes, but he also gave a pitch invader what for.

Time for some transfer news/rumors:

In case you're wondering, yes, I only read about rumors involving players based in Madrid.

Spain has named a nearly full-force squad for the June 4th friendly against the United States in Boston.

Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Xabi Alonso, Andres Iniesta, David Silva and David Villa will all travel.
