In a change of course from earlier this week, U.S. Soccer has given Sporting Kansas City midfielder Birahim Diop a one-game suspension for "violent conduct" in the 75th minute of KC's 3-2 loss to New England on Saturday. He will serve the suspension tomorrow.
Originally, a red-card was issued to defender Aurelien Collin. Upon further review, his suspension was lifted due to a case of mistaken identity. Video review showed Diop to have committed the foul.
From the league's press release:
"Because the misconduct was assessed and included in the match report, and the only reason Diop was not sanctioned initially was because of mistaken identity, the FIFA Disciplinary Code requires that Diop be issued the red card and serve the corresponding one-match suspension. Per the corrected interpretation, the MLS Disciplinary Committee did not have jurisdiction to decide whether or not Diop would be suspended."
