LONDON (AP) — American midfielder Stuart Holden set up Bolton's first score and had a goal disallowed in its 2-0 win over Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.
Holden swung in a perfect free kick that was met by England defender Gary Cahill, whose header deflected the ball into the net past U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard.
Daniel Sturridge kept up his impressive scoring record for Bolton by scoring from 10 yards in the 67th to seal a win for the hosts, who are now a point behind seventh-place Sunderland.
The England under-21 forward scored for the third straight match since joining on loan from Chelsea on transfer deadline day.
Holden had a goal disallowed in the 79th when the ball was judged to be out of play as Sturridge backheeled into the area.
Everton struggled to create many clear-cut chances and remain 13th in the standings, three points off the relegation zone.
"It's probably the poorest performance I have seen from us for a long time," said Everton manager David Moyes, who acknowledged his team is embroiled in a relegation battle with 12 games remaining.
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Real Madrid survived goalkeeper Iker Casillas' ejection 90 seconds in to win 1-0 at Espanyol as Marcelo scored on an angled shot off a pass from Cristiano Ronaldo in the 24th minute.
Casillas received the red card from referee Antonio Miguel Mateu Lahoz for a foul of Jose Callejon in a one-on-one situation with the goal wide open. Backup goalkeeper Antonio Adan immediately came in, with Madrid taking off Angel Di Maria.
Real Madrid (18-2-3) closed within five points of first-place Barcelona (20-1-2), which tied 1-1 Saturday at Sporting Gijon, stopping Barca's Spanish league-record 16-game winning streak.

BERLIN (AP) — Lukas Podolski and Milivoje Novakovic each scored twice as Cologne beat Mainz 4-2 in the Bundesliga.
Podolski opened the scoring in the third minute on a free kick, but Sami Allagui equalized for Mainz in the 31st.
Novakovic knocked in the rebound from a save by Heinz Mueller, and Podolski scored his ninth goal of the season in the 55th after eluding two defenders and rounding the goalkeeper.
Cologne provisionally moves out of the relegation zone into 13th place while Mainz drops to fourth.
Werder Bremen moved out of the relegation zone after Per Mertesacker equalized in a fiery 1-1 draw at home to Hannover.

AMSTERDAM (AP) — Ajax lost ground in its bid to win the club's first Dutch league title in seven years after missing a late penalty in a 2-2 draw at Roda JC on Sunday.
The visitors were awarded a spot kick in the 88th minute, but striker Mounir El Hamdaoui missed his attempt.
Ajax led 1-0 when Miralem Sulejmani latched onto a pass from Christian Eriksen to score after 13 minutes, and teammate Siem de Jong doubled the lead in the 34th.
But Roda struck back with Mads Junker's goal seven minutes later and Anouar Hadouir, playing in his 200th league match, equalized with a free kick in the 82nd.

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — Celtic moved five points clear of Glasgow rival Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premier League with a 3-1 victory at Dundee United on Sunday.
Celtic went into halftime at Tannadice with a 2-0 lead thanks to deflected efforts by top scorer Anthony Stokes and Mark Wilson.
The hosts, who came into the match boasting an 11-game unbeaten run, halved the deficit in the 64th minute on a close-range finish by David Goodwillie.
But Celtic wrapped up the win on a Daniel Majstorovic header, extending its run to 16 matches without defeat.
Second-place Rangers, which beat Motherwell 6-0 on Saturday, has two games in hand over its cross-city rival.
ISTANBUL (AP) — American forward Jozy Altidore made his debut for Bursaspor in a 1-1 draw at Eskisehirspor in the Turkish league.
Altidore, who joined Bursaspor on transfer deadline day on loan until the end of the season, played 77 minutes before being substituted.
Bursaspor is provisionally second in the league, behind leader Trabzonspor.
